Episcopal Youth Leadership Academy Holds First Gathering

group This past Saturday morning, twelve young people grades 6 - 10, arrived at St. Crispin's to begin their first weekend with the Episcopal Youth Leadership Academy (EYLA). Armed with sleeping bags and ready to begin, Mike Roberts, co-director of St. Crispin's, started off the morning with ice breakers and getting to know you games. With each new game they played, they moved on to team building exercises, communication and listening skills, and personality  traits. They went outside to play "Tanks", and discovered if they were a an otter was herelion, otter, beaver, or retriever. This personality trait test was given as the group's homework assignment as they were asked to take another Tanksgroup through the test and bring back the results at our November gathering.

An evening hay ride with music (thanks to John Zuk)  took the group to the top of the property overlooking both lakes, a site that could become our next outdoor chapel. There, Tim Sean Youmans guided the group through Evening Prayer, the first official worship offered at the site. hayride2

A late night movie and off to bed ended Saturday. But Sunday morning was also a first - The Polar Bear Club was initiated. Many of the youth braved the 7:15 a.m. dip in the pool, and were asked to sign the official oar set aside for Polar Bears in the future!

Everyone dressed and packed up their items as we drove to Emmanuel, Shawnee, and worshipped as a community. Parents or those transporting the youth home were invited to join us in worship.

Honor Dance Celebration

We marked our Twenty-Sixth Annual Honor Dance this year. The day was gorgeous as we began with prayer and Gourd Dancing. New friends came from all over the country, including the United Thank Offering National Board. The Board was made to feel at home and each member was presented with a Cheyenne beaded cross.

To begin Holy Eucharist, the head singer played a blessing song on the drum as we processed around the outdoor dance arena and into the Church- everyone got the chance to dance this year! We sang Cheyenne Hymns and Bishop Ed and I baptized two children during the service. Duane Paul of All Saints' in Duncan presented a beautiful Native American flute to Whirlwind Mission of the Holy Family. He made this flute and played it for the Offertory.

We had a great dinner after worship that included barbecued ribs, fry bread, corn soup, slow cooked brisket, and lots of cakes. After breaking bread, everyone moved back outside to watch the children dance and adults compete in various categories for prizes. Throughout the night lots of raffle prizes were won like food baskets, colorful dance shawls and Pendleton blankets. A Pow wow drum made by Malcolm Whitebird, Sr. was raffled and raised more than $1,000 for projects at the mission. The winner of the drum was Charlotte Anne Cockrell of Canyon, Texas.

Thanks to everyone who came this year and shared their talents and stories with us, especially volunteers from Whirlwind Mission and the Oklahoma Council on Indian Ministries. The next Honor Dance will be Saturday, September 7th, 2013. We hope to see next year! If you have questions contact The Rev. Jim Kee-Rees at jkeerees@epiok.org

MIQRA

You have been seeing the word and some information but here's more! A Miqra (meek rah) is a public reading of Scripture.

Our Miqra is to be offered January 19 - 21, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Edmond. We actually begin on Friday (the 18th) morning, with the help of volunteers - college students, youth ministers, and other volunteers - and the reading begins.

A small group of youth who have been working on the planning will get together on Friday after school and do the prep work to ready for everyone. We will share a meal together and worship together. The reading continues.

The event officially begins on Saturday (the 19st) at noon. Everyone who comes will have an opportunity to sign up to read scripture, but it is not mandatory that you read. Reading slots are 1 hour in length and a maximum of three can sign up for a particular hour.

Periodically throughout the weekend, we will pause in our various program activities to listen to the reading. Participants are also given free time where they can choose to sit in the nave and listen to the reading. Reading continues around the clock from the time we start until finished. These readings are usually covered by parents and adult volunteers.

Now, while the reading is going on in the nave, we are offering all types of workshops for the participants. They will have "tribe time" in which they will engage in discussions or activities. We will have games, movies, crafts, and of course, food.

We will end on Monday morning at 9:30 with a closing worship service. We will read the final chapter of Revelation together as a group at our closing worship.

So what are we asking of you? Hopefully, you will want to attend and participate. Maybe you play a musical instrument and would like to be a part of that offering. Talk it up with the youth in your congregation. Get them excited about this 1st Miqra. Get people registered!

Adults - we need lots of help for this. You don't have to be involved in Youth Ministry to participate. Volunteer to be a tribe leader, reader, provide snacks, or even lead a workshop!

This promises to be one of the best events we have ever offered!

Stewardship Resources

"Growing a Grateful & Generous Heart" is a curriculum for children written several years ago by staff (and others) at the Church Center. Cokesbury carries it now and it is discounted at 70%. Take home papers for children, family papers, etc. Covers all aspects of Stewardship.

In terms of picture books, you might look at:

Bibles for Youth

"I am looking forward to the release of the Common English Bible for Youth which will be coming out soon. I am also found the CEB (Deep Blue Kids Bible) for ages 7-12 good with it's sidebars and comments. I find the 'characters' a bit hokey, but the sections and icons are helpful for study use. There is also a comparison chart on their website with reading grade levels of all versions of the bible. This version was set to be approved at General Convention and I'm not sure where it ended up . . . Having Peterson's "The Message" and a few other translations added to the resolution mucked things up.

I still encourage adults and youth to also read the NRSV (if possible) because that is the translation that is usually read during worship services in Episcopal Churches and referenced in most curricula that we might consider "Episcopal." There is NOT an official "Episcopal" bible.

http://www.commonenglishbible.com/Explore/CompareTranslations/ComparisonCha

rt/tabid/301/Default.aspx

In my recent writing of youth curriculum materials, I am using the Common English Bible." Sharon Pearson - Church Publishing

'My preferred Student Youth Bible is this one. http://amzn.com/0310926823

It's NRSV and has a some good study resources including a good reading the Bible in one year program. Also edited by Phillip Yancey. 20 bucks for a Hardback is not bad." Randall Curtis - Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas

"Our tweens and youth have really liked the Spark Bible (not the story bible, which is for younger kids), which is NRSV and has great sidebars, notes, suggestions, and even stickers in the back that youth can use to mark what they like, what they don't understand, what they've learned or memorized, etc." Tina Clark - Denver

"We present all of our second graders with copies of *The Children's Illustrated Bible" published by Doris Kindersley. Despite the pictures (which are actually not too hokey), I think kids continue to use it into their teen years - not so much for devotional reading but to remind themselves of a story or gather some historical context. There are all sorts of fun facts in the margins. I admit to using it all the time for quick and easy reference." Boykin Bell, Chapel Hill, NC

Closing Prayer for September

September

"God of light, thank you for the warm, sunny days of summer and all the fun we had. Now that it's September and summer's ending, help us to stay focused on new tasks and challenges ahead and embrace all that the fall has to offer us. Let us live with joy in the world You've given us, now and always. Amen."
