Preparing for Diocesan Convention
In preparing for our up-coming Diocesan Convention, the Secretary of Convention is working on a video celebrating the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church in Oklahoma. Each congregation is asked to submit a video of the congregation saying the words "We are the Episcopal Church." Ideally this would be submitted in electronic format (.mov is preferred) to Melanie Wignall (mwignall@cox.net) via email or mailing a CD or jump drive to her. The video should be shot in 16:9 (widescreen ration). Please submit these to Melanie by September 15th. |

Honor Dance
The Honor Dance at Whirlwind Mission in Watonga is approaching quickly on September 8th. It begins at 1:00 p.m. with Gourd Dancing and continues with worship, dinner and contest dancing, a full day and night of excitement. The way we do worship every year is unique to the Diocese of Oklahoma.
Much of the service will be familiar, and comes from the Book of Common Prayer. What is unique is that we add elements of our tribal cultures and traditions. Tribal hymn singing has always been a part of Native American congregations in Oklahoma. On Sunday mornings across the state you can hear hymns sung in Choctaw, Cherokee, Mvskoke, Kiowa and many others languages. We sing Cheyenne Hymns every Sunday at Whirlwind Mission and we are always working to learn more.
Another tradition that we follow is blessing ourselves with cedar smoke before worship begins. A similar comparison to this is the use of incense in many parishes. I know many choirs do not like incense, but even so, it is a wonderful image of the Spirit dwelling with us, blessing us, and taking our prayers to God.
Some things will look different when you worship at Whirlwind Mission. We burn cedar in an abalone shell on a stand. Next to the stand is a Cheyenne Beaded Processional Cross. Much of the furniture around the altar is made from cedar, which has a long history of being used in Native American ceremonies. We use Native American baskets to collect our offerings, and have a beautiful set of Zia Pueblo pottery for Holy Eucharist. We look forward to seeing you as we celebrate our life together in the Church, and that we are all one tribe in Christ! |
Safeguarding God's Children Training

Safeguarding is required every 4 years for clergy, vestry, treasurers, bishop's committee members, those who work with children - Sunday School teachers, youth ministers, choir directors, and sextons, those who serve on vestry or Bishop's Committees, and anyone with a key to a congregation. This would be a great time to get trained before the beginning of your program year.

Godly Play Training
This past weekend, twelve individuals gathered at St. Augustine's of Canterbury as a national trainer from Boston came in to offer Godly Play training. These individuals came from New Mexico, Dallas, TX, and across the state. It was an incredible learning opportunity for all.
In order to help small congregations move forward with this program, the Diocese will be purchasing patterns for the materials that may be loaned to congregations for their use in making materials. We are also looking into a lamintating machine. It is our hope that these purchases will help you get into being able to use Godly Play much sooner and at a more reasonable set up cost for our parishes.
Please note that we also have the lesson books available for checkout.

Closing Prayer for August and Beginning of School Year
Dear Lord, as we begin this new school year, we gather
once again as your community of believers.
We thank you for the energy and the spirit that you renewed
in us through the summer months.
We thank you for the time to enjoy our family and
friends and to reflect on what is important in our lives.
Let this year be marked by enthusiasm and love so that,
with the inspiration of your Spirit, we may continue
to grow in our faith.
Help us to fulfill Your hope for us with honest intentions
and works of faith.
Let us be gentle with ourselves and bring laughter, joy
and love to others.
We ask this in your name. Amen. |
