Preparing for Diocesan Convention

In preparing for our up-coming Diocesan Convention, the Secretary of Convention is working on a video celebrating the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church in Oklahoma. Each congregation is asked to submit a video of the congregation saying the words "We are the Episcopal Church." Ideally this would be submitted in electronic format (.mov is preferred) to Melanie Wignall (mwignall@cox.net) via email or mailing a CD or jump drive to her. The video should be shot in 16:9 (widescreen ration). Please submit these to Melanie by September 15th.

Episcopal Softball Teams Season End

St. John's softball team

This is a photo of the "Beloved" St. John's Norman softball team after the league playoff last night at Reeves Park in Norman.

We were 6-2 in regular league play but lost last night to St. Mary's and to St. Paul's.

St. Mary's Edmond won the playoff with St. Michael's Norman second, St. Paul's third and the Beloved last.

Great fun was had by all who played and the after game fellowship was exceptional. Owen Mills of St. John's was the driving force behind the league and was our team coach. He hopes more OKC area Episcopal churches will take part next year.

The Church of the Redeemer of Oklahoma City proudly salutes Ms. Darbi Williams, winner of the Miss Black Oklahoma City University; Miss Black Oklahoma;and, the Miss Black International 2012 pageants. Having been crowned Miss Black Oklahoma City University (March 3) and Miss Black Oklahoma (June 17) in Oklahoma City competing with 11 other contestants, Darbi went on to win the Miss Black International 2012 title in Atlanta, GA. on August 4 . The selection of finalists for these competitions is based on the contestants' demonstration of personal commitment, ambition, hard work and talent. At the international pageant, Darbi won the Talent Award for her piano performance as well as the Interview Award. After her dynamic interview, the judges commented she "gave them chills".

Ms. Williams has already made two appearances including meeting the Surgeon General of the United States and she will be making various appearances nationwide during the year. Her platformis "Living Protected: HIV/AIDS Awareness" which focuses on college-aged African American females. She is currently working on an HIV/AIDS Awareneseek event to be held this fall at the Oklahoma City University campus.

Williams, who graduated from Northeast Academy for Health Sciences and Engineering in Oklahoma City, is following in the footsteps of her mother, Gina and grandmother, Rosamond in the field of Nursing. Darbi completed her Bachelor's degree in May 2012 at Oklahoma City University Kramer School of Nursing with a major in Nursing and a minor in Public Relations. She will return to OCU this fall to continue academic work toward a Master's degree.

Darbi currently serves as pianist and guitarist at the Church of the Redeemer. She has also served as Counselor In Training at St. Crispin's Summer Camp. She enjoys reading, studying, being with friends and describes herself as an avid OKC Thunder fan.

Darbi, a 3rd generation Episcopalian, is the daughter of Gina and Colin Williams; maternal granddaughter of Bettye and Clarence (deceased) Griffin; and fraternal granddaughter of Rosamond Williams Elliott. Her grandfather, Father Cecil Williams served as Rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Oklahoma City from 1960 until his death in 1981.

"First and foremost I thank God for everything that has happened in my life and where He brought me thus far", Williams stated. "I'm excited to begin my reign as Ms. Black International and to continue to spread HIV/AIDS awareness to my community and country."

Our best wishes and heartiest congratulations are extended to our own Darbi for her accomplishments!

Safeguarding Policies Apply to Everyone - From Administrators to Sextons

Not only is Safeguarding required for almost everyone in a congregation, the Diocese has designed and adopted Policies for Parish Ministries with Children and Youth. These policies and supplemental (forms) can be found on the Diocesan web page, under Congregational Resources. These policies set out the requirements for maintaining employment files, sets out who is required to have Safeguarding, and sets out appropriate monitoring and supervising policies. These policies were adopted in October 2008.

If you are not aware of these policies and how they apply to our congregations, please run off a copy from the web site, review them, and then look at your congregation's policies and files to see if you are in compliance.

Safeguarding God's Children Training

  Safeguarding

Safeguarding is required every 4 years for clergy, vestry, treasurers, bishop's committee members, those who work with children - Sunday School teachers, youth ministers, choir directors, and sextons, those who serve on vestry or Bishop's Committees, and anyone with a key to a congregation. This would be a great time to get trained before the beginning of your program year.

MIQRA - Save the date. Next January 19-21, as we offer our first MIQRA. What is MIQRA? It is an event to youth and adults who want to participate in reading the Bible from beginning to end! That's right - three days of non-stop Bible reading - but wait! There's more! There will be games, movies, activities, quite time, and much more going on at the same time! This will be held at St. Mary's Church, Edmond.

Next Youth Commission Meeting is September 29, at the Diocesan Offices, Noon. Planning for Convention and Miqra. We will be working on the Mission:Possible theme, and worship for Saturday morning of convention. Bring prayers, song ideas, worship thoughts and come join the fun. Please note the change of date.

Closing Prayer for August and Beginning of School Year

 back to school

Dear Lord, as we begin this new school year, we gather

once again as your community of believers.

We thank you for the energy and the spirit that you renewed

in us through the summer months.

We thank you for the time to enjoy our family and

friends and to reflect on what is important in our lives.

Let this year be marked by enthusiasm and love so that,

with the inspiration of your Spirit, we may continue

to grow in our faith.

Help us to fulfill Your hope for us with honest intentions

and works of faith.

Let us be gentle with ourselves and bring laughter, joy

and love to others.

We ask this in your name. Amen.
