7 Hard Truths About the Practice of Hospitality
 1. There will be someone you don't really want to welcome walking through your door at least once every day. This is human-which is not to say you shrug your shoulders and ignore it. Acknowledge it, cut yourself some slack, and say hello.
2. Never kick someone out of your heart. But you can ask them to leave the space.
3. Self-forgiveness is non-negotiable. As a wise priest once told me, "You are not perfect, but you are divine." You will make mistakes. Tomorrow is a new day.
4. Setting rules, boundaries, and limitations is not easy, especially when you see people in need. But remember, the people in need will benefit from the peace and well-being that is created in the space by the rules you established.
5. The power of your hospitality will not always be seen in the moment. A warm, heartfelt welcome is a gift that can be difficult for someone to receive. Have faith. Keep showing up. Hospitality is, above all, a practice.
6. Everyone deserves beauty. Providing that for another is part of the practice.
7. Everyone likes to help. Never be totally ready for the party. Receiving is part of hospitality, too.

Safeguarding God's Children
Safeguarding God's Children is not a suggestion of the Diocese - it is a requirement. If you have childcare workers, Sunday school teachers, vestry members, a bishop's committee, children's choir, or offer Vacation Bible School, someone is required to be trained - not only clergy. We have additional trainers throughout the diocese who are willing to help get people trained.
There is one scheduled training event being offered for Safeguarding in February:
23rd - St. Philip's Ardmore, 5 p.m.
You can register for training at: http://www.epiok.org/resources/safeguarding_god_s_children.html |

Stewardship
When church leaders talk about stewardship, they tell me it is being the caretaker of all of God's creation. Yet, when they tell me about their stewardship initiatives, often times they say the only time they present stewardship concepts is when asking members to make financial commitments.
This seems to me to be fundraising in the name of stewardship. Even so, fundraisers understand the process of involving donors in the mission and work of the organization is ongoing throughout the year, every year. When donors are integrated into the fabric of the charity, commitment increases in every aspect of their service... including financial contributions.
Our church has the greatest mission of any charity: bringing people to relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Other charities that do good works may compete for donors, but they do not share the Church's ultimate mission. Our role in the church is to help our members live out that mission.
The following information is intended to help understand who is attending our churches so that members can become more involved in stewarding the Church's Mission. For assistance in developing a year-round stewardship plan please contact The Office of Stewardship at 918-712-7002 or email cfabian@epiok.org.
Generally 40-45% of our members do not pledge. The church provides a service. These members are not engaged in the community. It doesn't occur to them to give. Some will give when they attend, but do not pledge.
20% of this group we'll call Visitors (They may or may not be members.) They do not plan to go to church and attendance is irregular. They have a very limited vision of themselves as related to the Church. They are not involved in life of parish, and do not give to pledge or plate.
20-25% are Unconnected Members. Their vision/relationship is about 3 months. They have sporadic attendance but think about coming to church. They are not involved in life of the parish but give to plate when attending. Their gift is cash, usually $5, $10 or $20.
Another 45% are Belonging Members: the core of the church. These people care deeply for the church and are committed to its future. Their pledges follow a secular, charitable pattern. They consider their giving dues or fair share giving.
Dues Paying Members have a self-vision of relationship of about a year. There is a strong need for belonging. They are marginally involved in life of the parish and think of pledges as dues. Pledges tend to be influenced by secular experience and are given in the range of $150 - $600 per year.
Fair Share Members have a self-vision of relationship of 3 years and think of themselves as members. They are involved in life of parish, especially when asked. When considering their pledges, they will divide the church budget by the number of members for their "fair share". These gifts will range from $400 - $1200 per year.
10-15% are our leaders. They are involved with the mission of the church and consider themselves partners with Christ. These people see themselves as stewards and give out of the need to give God a thankful response for the blessings in their lives. They give an intentional percentage of income. This group gives 75% or more of the annual income of the church.
10% Meaningful Membership Their vision is for a lifetime. They are asking spiritual questions; exploring spiritual practices and practicing holy habits. They pledge a percentage or tithe
1-5% Purposeful MembershipTheir vision is eternity. Their purpose is to serve God and are able to minister to others. They make Joyful gifts of tithe and beyond. |

Parish Resources
As we begin to near Lent, the topic of how one talks to children about death always comes up. There are a good number of resources available to help talk to children about death.
Check the resource section on the website www.childrensgrief.org for a list of books.
The Grieving Child by Helen Fitzgerald. It is written for parents/caregivers, but it addresses all aspects of grief in children. Fitzgerald is very straightforward. She is particularly good at pointing out ways to create ritual throughout the grieving process.
Water Bugs and Dragonflies and it is written by Doris Stickney. It explains death by way of a story about a water bug that changes into a dragonfly. It comes in two different versions. One version is large, hardcover, and colorful (like a typical children's book), and the other is small, paperback, and thin with more limited pictures. Each has it's own advantages. The large one is more attractive and eye-catching for kids. The small one has better tips for parents in the back on what to say, and what NOT to say, to children about death.
The Next Place by Warren Hanson
From LeaderResources, you might check out "Guiding Children Through Life's Losses" by Phyllis Wezeman. It's a download so you can make copies for all of your teachers and parents....especially since it includes a section on dealing with the death of a pet (something most families will have to face at some point).
Yonder by Tony Johnston
Tear Soup by Pat Schwiebert
Help Me Say Goodbye: Activities for Helping Kids Cope When a Special Person Dies by Janis Silverman which offers some excellent ideas using art therapy and other principles to help children express some of their feelings and ask some of their questions
A Pillow for My Mom by Charissa Sgouros, Christine Ross (Illustrator)
We have several different books here in the Diocesan Resource Center which are available for check out that deal with death.
