Safeguarding God's Children

Safeguarding God's Children is a requirement for all clergy and deacons, and those who work with children and youth. This is not a one -time training, and you must re-certify every 4 years to stay current. Over 1,000 individuals in our Diocese have been trained but there is more work to be done.

There are 24 trainers now in the diocese and they are more than willing to help you and your congregation get the training you need.

Please call Sabrina at the Diocesan Offices to discuss training at your congregation.

Parish Resources

A Christian Formation newsletter for January went out last week. If you did not receive it and would like to be on the mailing list, contact Sabrina at the Diocese.

Looking for an idea for Lent? What about a study on the Psalms? One program is called "Journey through the Psalms", done by Denise Dombkowski Hopkins, professor of Hebrew Bible at Wesley Theological Seminary. It is a DVD serie.s with 8 lessons and is endorsed by Walter Bruggeman.  While we do not have this in the Resource Room, please let us know if this is something you'd like to have available for use in your parish.

"Psalm Meditations" provides a meditation on each Psalm appointed for the church year and reflection questions for personal meditation or group discussion. Use as a bulletin insert that invites worshippers to meditate on the Psalms before the service or take home and reflect on during the week. You can find it at: http://leaderresources.org/psalm-meditations

re:form Ancestors DVD (Old Testament) - this is now available for check out from the Resource Center. There are 15 stories to choose from. Could be a good idea for VBS!

Kerygma Bible Study has a new catalog of their materials. Check it out at:  http://www.kerygma.com/kerygma/Oct'11%20Bklt.pdf

Stewardship

Epiphany

by Walter Brueggemann.

On Epiphany day,
we are still the people walking.
We are still people in the dark,
and the darkness looms large around us,
beset as we are by fear,
anxiety,
brutality,
violence,
loss--
a dozen alienations that we cannot manage.

We are-we could be-people of your light.
So we pray for the light of your glorious presence
as we wait for your appearing;
we pray for the light of your wondrous grace
as we exhaust our coping capacity;
we pray for your gift of newness that
will override our weariness;
we pray that we may see and know and hear and trust
in your good rule.

That we may have energy, courage, and freedom to enact

your rule all through the demands of this day.

We submit our day to you and to your rule,
with deep joy and high hope.

Seniors Use Prayer To Cope With Stress; Prayer No. 1 Alternative Remedy

If you're an older American and suffered from holiday stress this season, odds are good you used prayer to ward it off, new research shows.

A study from the University of Florida and Wayne State University shows most older adults use prayer more than any other alternative health remedy to help manage the stress in their lives. In addition, nurse researchers found that prayer is the most frequently reported alternative treatment used by seniors to feel better or maintain health in general.

UF College of Nursing associate professor Ann L. Horgas and Karen S. Dunn, a Wayne State University doctoral student, report 96 percent of older adults use prayer to specifically cope with stress.

The study, published in the December issue of the Journal of Holistic Nursing, also shows that 84 percent of the respondents reported using prayer more than other alternative remedies to feel better or to maintain their health. In fact, from a list of 32 alternative therapies, prayer is used more often than exercise, heat, relaxation techniques, humor or herbal remedies to maintain overall health.  To continue article, click here.

And You Said...

It is always exciting to hear your responses to things in the newsletter. This section will contain comments from you pertaining to articles.

With regards to Second Half of Life article, "After reading the Diocesan Newsletter a short while ago I wanted to write to say I will be 60 this Spring and I can't wait!!!!  It was stated that some people feel suicidal as they age.  Yes, I can understand that very well.  Growing older can be very frightening.  I am extremely lucky, however.  I had all those feelings when I was much younger and am very proud to say that the older I get the younger I feel and now feel younger than I did 30 years ago and am proud of it; God has given me a real gift!!!!

Blessings,

Vicki"

What does your Church Nursery Say - "My mentor in seminary didn't write papers which few would read.  He consulted with churches about their buildings and programs.  His method was that once the contract with the church board was signed, they had to keep his up-coming visit a secret.  He attended all Sun morn worships in secret.  After the last service, he would get the keys to the building(s) and run off all the leaders.  They would see him in the evening when he gave his oral report.

The first place he visited was the nursery.  The first thing he looked at in the nursery was the diaper pail.

If a congregation left a dirty diaper pail, the congregation was on the down hill side.

As Jesus said, "Those who are incompetent in the little things will be incompetent in the big things."

Thanks, Richard Hicks"

Closing - Thought for New Year

New Years

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives...not looking for flaws, but for potential.
