Music that Makes Community XVI

October 6 - 11 in Houston, Texas

http://www.allsaintscompany.org/event/music-makes-community-xvi-houston

This three day, Thursday-Saturday, workshop offers practical, wholly embodied, experiential teaching of the practice of leading paperless music. Workshop sources for the music include:

Music By Heart (Church Publishing),

Selections from Iona's Wild Goose Resources,

Newly composed paperless music we are

continuing to create, collect and share, and

Music from world, South African, and folk sources.

The practice you'll learning for teaching and sharing this kind of music works well

in traditional liturgical settings with familiar hymnody,

      in contemporary or innovative liturgy,

      in children's liturgies,

in learning settings with children and with adults (or inter-generationally).

Myths about Aging and Your Health

Seniors exercising

Some people think that if you don't take care of yourself when you're young, there's nothing you can do to fend off health problems later in life. But that's not true. While taking care of your body with exercise and a good diet from a young age does have lasting benefits, getting a late start on a healthy lifestyle can still do the body a world of good -- no matter how late that start may be.

Researchers at the University of South Carolina studied a group of more than 15,000 adults aged 45 to 64. Over four years, they found that of those studied, the ones who adopted a healthy lifestyle (getting regular exercise, adopting good eating habits, maintaining a normal body weight, not smoking) had lower mortality rates and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease than those who didn't. Furthermore, the study noted that one of the reasons many older adults choose not to adopt a healthy lifestyle is that they believe it's too late for it to have much benefit [source: King].

Exercise, even for the advanced of age, has many benefits, including increased muscle strength and improved mobility. It can also help reduce the pain of arthritis. Even if you've never exercised a day in your life, starting in your later years can improve your health [source: Snyderman]. from Discovery Fit and Health.

Closing - Prayers for September

september 2011

Good-Bye Summer and Welcome Fall Prayer

"God of light, thank you for the warm, sunny days of summer and all the fun we had, especially [invite all present to share their favorite summer activities and memories]. Now that it's September and summer's ending, help us to stay focused on new tasks and challenges ahead and embrace all that the fall has to offer us, including [encourage all present to share their favorite fall activities, such as football or apple picking]. Let us live with joy in the world You've given us, now and always. Amen."

Prayer for Adjusting to the New School Year

"God of power and might, bless all those adjusting to a new school year this September. Grant them patience - with themselves and each other - as they deal with new teachers, subjects, schools, and skills. Change is never easy, but let those in transition find peace in You. Amen."
