Camp Sunday

Camp sunday 2011

The fourteenth annual Camp Sunday was held at St. Paul's Cathedral on August 14, 2011. About 150 campers and staff came together to celebrate St. Crispins camp 2011 by participating in a Eucharist with camp music.  During the service, we recognized the chaplains, deans, nurses, summer staff, cit's, and volunteers for giving of themselves to make camp such a wonderful experience.  Following the service, the Cathedral provided a picnic supper in Dean Willey Hall.  It gave everyone one more chance to be with their camp friends before going back to school.

Wonderful Wednesdays

During the months of June and July "Wonderful Wednesdays" were held at St Luke's in Bartlesville. Each Wednesday an average of 13 to 14 children and youth gathered from 3 to 6 in the afternoon and followed a similar structure: opening prayer, song and a Godly Play story that related to the focus of the day, snack, focus of the day, play time, and closing circle where we shared memories/thanksgivings for the day and a closing prayer.  The youth served as mentors, picture takers and storytellers.

The children were treated to variety of focuses and activities each week, all of which were lead by various people in the congregation and filled the majority of our afternoon.  A sampling of activities and focuses included:  outings to the local SPCA and Concern Food-bank, drawing inspiration from the stain-glass windows of St Luke's and creating their own stain-glass drawings, a visit to the Master garden of a couple in the church, and exploring the parable of the Good Samaritan through drama to name of few of the focuses throughout the summer.  On Sunday July 31st we concluded with a "Wonderful Sunday" where the children and youth processed in and out, served as lectors, and gathered around the altar for the Eucharist.  No "Wonderful Sunday" is complete without a sundae afterwards - there were plenty of sprinkles to share.

Blessed Indeed Are the Children

In this extreme heat, children have come to the rescue of Iron Gate!

Three little boys saved the life of one of Iron Gate's homless guests suffering from heat stroke.

Additionally, Vacation Bible School youth collected juice, fruit cups and other kid-friendly snack foods for Iron Gate Kids.

Can you congregation's youth - or adults - help in this weather emergency? Can you provide fresh fruit, water, cash donations, and especially prayers for Iron Gate and those they serve?

Cassock Missing

A cassock went missing from the vesting room at St. Michael's, Norman, following the visit of a large number of clergy for the ordination of Joseph Farber to the transitional diaconate about a year ago.  It is an Anglican-style cassock from Amly, short and wide and custom-made

If you attended this event and wore a robe, would you please check and see if you inadvertently took this robe with you when you left?

If it is not found, the church will have to purchase another one and many of you know how expensive this can be.

Amy Best Honored for Service to Children and Youth

Amy Best 1

After nine years of service to the children and youth at St. Patrick's Broken Arrow, Amy Best has passed the leadership role off to Ashley Haggard. Amy has been involved in all aspects of ministry - in the parish, diocese, province and wider church - going on mission trips, acolyte instruction, and probably eating more pizza than one might think possible. Although she is stepping down in this area of ministry, Amy is looking to see how she might next be called.

This past Sunday, St. Patrick's honored Amy by announcing the Amy Judin Best Annual Scholarship to be awarded to a deserving senior in the parish. Amy was privileged to  announce that Erica Miller had been chosen for the first award of $500.

Tulsa's Leading Center for Alzheimer's Completes Renovation

$2.5 Million Project Will Allow for More Individuals to Receive Treatment

Memory Center

Saint Simeon's announces the completion of renovations and improvements to their Memory Center in Tulsa. The final cost of the project is $2.5 million. With the completion of the Memory Center remodel, Saint Simeon's has now completed over $30 million in improvements in the last 5 years, including the building and opening of the new $23.3MM Dotson Family Assisted Living, and the Bishop Robert M. Moody Wellness Center in September 2009. All have been funded with private donations, no long term debt, and no impact to Resident rates.

Saint Simeon's Memory Center is home to 52 Residents with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. When it opened in 1994, it was the region's first and only assisted living and long term care center designed solely for persons with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Since then, the Saint Simeon's Memory Center has provided over 300,000 nights of compassionate and engaging Resident care, as well as peace of mind for Resident family members.

Memory Center improvements include: refurbishing all living and common areas, new furniture, new floor surfaces throughout, refurbishing all bath and kitchen areas in each living unit, moving the air handler unit to a more effective location, new paint and wallpaper, flooring in connecting hall, and landscaping enhancements. The newly renovated and remodeled homes feature more privacy and comfort for Residents, and a kitchenette for each home that also serves as a Nurse Station. Renovated homes have retained the charming and captivating "Memory Box" amenity outside each room. The Memory Boxes display unique and heartwarming tributes to each Resident, and are a comforting complement to the "family-home" décor and design of the leading-edge care facility. Residents enjoy these various home-like settings, which are designed to inspire activity and engage interest.

Because the Memory Center is part of the Saint Simeon's continuum of care, Residents benefit from the many other active living venues outside of the individual homes in the Memory Center. This is a holistic approach to Alzheimer's care that strives to meet the physical, mental and spiritual needs of each Resident, even through the latter stages of the disease. Memory Center Residents enjoy exercising in the Wellness Center, which includes a warm water, saline pool and exercise rooms; spending time with family and visitors in the Ice Cream Parlor; special lunch and fine dining outings in the Deisenroth Bistro; live musical performances and other entertainment in the Common Room; twice weekly worship services in both the Chapel as well as the Memory Center common areas; outdoor nature walks and activities; and much more.

An open house will be held in the Fall, and applications for new Residents are being accepted now. If you are interested in a personal tour, or have questions about Alzheimer's or aging issues, Saint Simeon's welcomes your call at (918) 794-1900.

Saint Simeon's is a not-for-profit, privately managed, picturesque senior living community that is home to men and women of all faiths who wish to live their later years in an environment with dignity, individuality and the highest level of independence possible. With over 51 years of expertise, Saint Simeon's offers multiple levels of Assisted Living, Memory Center and Health Care, and also features a Wellness Center with a warm-water saline pool. Saint Simeon's is located at 3701 N. Cincinnati Avenue in Tulsa. For more information about Saint Simeon's, please call (918) 794-1902 or visit www.saintsimeons.org.

Closing - Prayer for August

drought 2011

"God, you send rains in season. It is a season of need in Oklahoma. Send more rain to that parched land and more again across all the thirsty southern states. Find a small and willing cloud sitting bored over some vacant part of the Caribbean, and give it a push toward Oklahoma. Make a Hurricane, perhaps, not strong enough to destroy, but filled with warmed moisture and send it North. We ask you for rain. Let the drought unite many millions to ask you for help. We trust in you. You made the world to need the waters of heaven. You made the world to need the waters of life. You are the source of rain. We ask you. Let it rain. In Jesus name."
