It is with great sadness that I share with you the death of The Rev. Nancy King. Nancy died unexpectedly on July 16. Nancy served as Deacon at St. John's, Tulsa.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. this Saturday, July 23rd St. John's Episcopal Church, Tulsa. The address of the church is 4200 S. Atlanta Place.

In honor of Nancy King's ministry, her family has requested the attending clergy to please vest for the service. The color is white.

Please keep Nancy's family and the people of St. John's in your prayers.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our

prayers on behalf of your servant Nancy and grant her an

entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of

your saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and

25th Annual Honor Dance at Whirlwind

Honordance1

Join us for the Twenty-Fifth annual Honor Dance at Whirlwind Mission of the Holy Family in Watonga, Oklahoma. The dance is Saturday, September 10 starting at 1:00 p.m. It is sponsored by the Oklahoma Council on Indian Ministries and Whirlwind Mission of the Holy Family.

The annual Honor Dance held on the Feast Day of David Pendleton Oakerhater is the only one of its kind honoring this Cheyenne Deacon in the United States. It is a dance of respect, recognition, and remembrance, and through it Whirlwind Mission of the Holy Family integrates Episcopal worship with Native American Spirituality. This major festival celebrates Native American ministries, and provides a religious and cultural context for all people around the Diocese to celebrate our past and future.

The day will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Gourd Dancing, and lots of great raffle prizes will be offered throughout the afternoon and evening. One prize is a beautiful drum made by Malcolm WhiteBird. Holy Eucharist will begin at 3:15 p.m., and will include many Native American hymns. Dinner will be provided to everyone in attendance at 4:30 p.m. We cook a big feast every year with lots of brisket, fry bread, corn soup and deserts. The evening Gourd Dance session starts at 6:00 p.m. This year we will have a number of Intertribal dances for everyone to enjoy like the Snake, Two Step, Round Dance and Buffalo dances.

Safeguarding God's Children Training Opportunities

We have been working hard to provide Safeguarding training sessions so that all clergy, including deacons, would have an opportunity to be trained. It is our intention that all clergy and deacons complete Safeguarding God's Children training  by the end of the year. In order to help you out, we have scheduled the following training opportunities:

August 9                St. Paul's, Claremore - 10 a.m.

September 20      Diocesan Center, OKC - 10 a.m.

October 13            St. Andrew's, Stillwater - 10 a.m.

November  19       St. Basil's, Tahlequah - 10 a.m.

December 5          St. Luke's, Chickasha - 5:30 p.m.

These trainings should take about 3 hours long.

August 12              Train the Trainer opportunity at the Diocesan Offices beginning at 9:30 a.m. This training will take about 5 1/2 hours long. You should bring your lunch and $5 to cover drinks and snacks.

Safeguarding God's Children is required of all clergy and deacons who are active in ministry within the diocese, including clergy that serve as supply. Attendance at one of these trainings is mandatory.  Safeguarding must be retaken every 5 years for clergy.

These trainings are open to all in people of the Diocese. Even if you have had safeguarding in the past, you must recertify every 5 years to keep current. You can download the registration form at:
