Pentecost

Pentecost

WHAT IS PENTECOST?

Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Pentecost means "fiftieth day" and is celebrated fifty days after Easter.

WHAT HAPPENED ON PENTECOST?

Ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the twelve apostles, Jesus' mother and family, and many other of His disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish harvest festival that was celebrated on the fiftieth day after Passover.  While they were indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads.  This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh promised by God through the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28-29).  The disciples were suddenly empowered to proclaim the gospel of the risen Christ.  They went out into the streets of Jerusalem and began preaching to the crowds gathered for the festival.  Not only did the disciples preach with boldness and vigor, but by a miracle of the Holy Spirit they spoke in the native languages of the people present, many who had come from all corners of the Roman Empire.  This created a sensation.  The apostle Peter seized the moment and addressed the crowd, preaching to them about Jesus' death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins.  The result was that about three thousand converts were baptized that day.  (You can read the Biblical account of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-41).

To All Happening Alums

Happening Alums

Do you remember your first Happening? The excitement of getting to know God and yourself a little bit better? What about when you discovered that there were people all over the Diocese and country who were thinking and praying for you while you Happened? We would like to continue to be able to share that feeling with all our future Happeners but we need your help! There are several ways to do this:

1. You can send Caritas to the Diocesan offices to be taken to St. Crispin's for Happening 58.

2. You can donate money or food to keep our Happeners well fed (we are asking churches and individuals to help with this so we can keep costs low and in turn keep attendance up!)

3. You can get on our new email list so you can be kept up to date on Happening events.

4. You can get on our volunteer list to help at future Happenings.

5. Do all of the above!!!!

Happening 58 will be held July 6-8 at St. Crispin's. We would love to have as many people as possible attend our closing celebration on the 8th. Please plan to arrive between 9:45 and 10:15 as Eucharist will start promptly at 10:30 am. Happening is an important part of many of our faith journeys and we would love for it to continue to be. If you have any questions, would like to get on our email list or would like more information on how you can help spread some Caritas please email us at [email protected]

Keep letting it Happen,

6th Grade Now Open for the 2011-12 Academic Year

Last November, St. Mary's Episcopal School celebrated the Blessing and Ground Breaking Ceremony for the school's Middle School expansion. The special event, led by the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma Bishop, the Right Reverend Edward J. Konieczy, signified the official advancement to becoming a preschool through eighth grade model.  This fall, the school will offer 6th grade and is now accepting enrollments.  Seventh grade will follow for 2012-13 and 8th in 2013-14.

"By expanding our school to eighth grade, we are able to complete our mission of preparing children spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically," said Nancy Hetherington, Head of School.  She added that offering a continuous program for children from age three to fifteen, combines the of best of early childhood, elementary and middle school worlds and prepares students for a smooth transition to high school.

Research has shown that preschool through 8th grade school students demonstrate higher levels of achievement; have higher attendance rates; display better self esteem, leadership and attitudes toward school;  and have fewer discipline problems.

"This is an exciting opportunity to continue the Episcopal tradition of academic excellence and the outstanding enrichment opportunities that have become synonymous with St. Mary's Episcopal School", said Sarah Woods, Director of the Middle School Division. Woods added that the middle school will be taught by exceptional veteran teachers, and many of the enrichment courses that will challenge students, while also having fun.

True to the vision of St. Mary's Episcopal School, middle school students will learn to be effective leaders as the school continues to focus on doing God's work through service to others.

Academic Opportunities for the upcoming 6th grade include:

Specialized mathematics program with a focus on advanced mathematics

Specialized Language Arts program with a focus on literature analysis, writing, poetry, grammar, reading, and vocabulary

Specialized science program focusing on inquiry-based instruction and learning
