50 days of Easter

Overall Themes as the Great Fifty Days Unfold

·         The role of the church is to continue the proclamation of the resurrection expressed with such joy at that first Easter. We hear the proclamation of the resurrection in order to pass on the Good News.

·         In a sense, Christ rose again within the church. Through the Holy Spirit, the risen Christ is revealed in every new generation. The apostles found themselves filled with the power to continue the acts of Jesus that revealed God's presence: Peter healed the man at the Beautiful Gate (Acts 3:1-10); "Many signs and wonders were done among the people through the apostles" (Acts 5:12a); Philip unfolded the meaning of God's word to the Ethiopian eunuch on the road to Gaza (Acts 8:26-39).

·         The Great Fifty Days traditionally were a time when the mysteries of the faith were revealed to the recently baptized. The meaning of all that the candidates experienced in Holy Week and the Easter Vigil unfolds in this time of intense theological reflection on just what it means to live as a covenant people.

·         For congregations involved in the catechumenal process, the Great Fifty Days are a time of reflection on baptism. "What difference does my baptism make?" ask the recently baptized as they gather with priest, catechist, sponsor, and those who have reaffirmed their Baptismal Covenant.

·         A question to ask each week: How will we know the risen Christ in our lives today?

Joe Norton Named Headmaster

Joe Norton

Kaye Nelson, Head of School, for St. John's Episcopal school is retiring after 25  years of teaching and administration.  The school will miss Mrs. Nelson dearly but at the same time is overjoyed at the decision to move Joe Norton, current Kindergarten teacher, into the position of Headmaster.  Joe came to St. John's at the beginning of the 10-11 school year and has already become loved and respected by children, parents and staff.

Joe Norton, graduated in 1985 with his Masters in Elementary Education from Southern Nazarene University.  He began his teaching career in the Oklahoma City area and ended up in Los Angeles, CA at Mirman School for Gifted Children where he taught for 20 years before retiring.  While at Mirman he served on their Admissions Committee, and served as chair of the Affective Committee which intervened with students who were having academic and discipline issues.  In 2005, he joined the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  This council has written five content and five process standards that are used by most independent schools in the United States.  Joe is a member of the California Association of Gifted, which set the standards for all levels of education.

The Board of Trustees for St. John's Episcopal School will be hosting a reception for parents and friends to meet Joe Norton on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 in Wade-Dalton Hall from 5 to 7 pm.  The teachers, staff and parents at St. John's are all very excited at the opportunities that are about to happen and feel that Mr. Norton will be a great asset to the school and will continue to move us in a positive, rewarding future.  You can check the schools website at www.stjohnsokc.com or call the school at 405-943-8583.

Summer Camp Staff Lunches on Saturday Need Help

Hello Everyone,place setting

My name is Aaron Mooney and I am the new Summer Camp Director at St. Crispin's.  While I've met many of you, I look forward to meeting the rest of you and having you come visit us this summer.  I'm writing to you today with a request.  But first a little background.

Last summer, as a money-saving endeavor, the summer camp committee decided to cancel the Saturday staff-only lunch service provided by the conference center.  We decided to provide for ourselves.  Sometimes we would eat sandwiches, sometimes a member of the staff would prepare the meal for us or order something in, etc.  While this indeed saved us money, it took one or more of the staff out of the community for a period of time.

So, here's the pitch.  We are looking for parishes to come prepare lunch for the camp staff on Saturdays this summer.  Our staff usually numbers about 25 people.  We can offer the use of  the small kitchen in the staff lounge as well as $50 in reimbursement for food costs.  Food could be prepared here or at the home parish.  It could be as simple or as complex as your volunteers wish.  If you or someone in your parish has any interest In helping us out, please contact me at StCrispinsDirector@gmail.com.

Looking forward to this summer, Aaron

St. Mary's Chancel Choir Outreach Ministry

St. Mary's choir

St. Mary's is reshaping its self-concept and its understanding of ministry.  On Good Friday, St. Mary's Chancel Choir did not participate in the parish's observation of the Holy Day. Instead, the choir traveled to Moore and joined the choir of New Life Methodist Church in their observation.  The congregation regarded the trip from the perspective of missional service, extending the resources of the parish beyond its parochial boundaries.  Fr. Mark Story applauded the initiative saying, "We are rediscovering what it means to be the Church and to be sent into the world.  The choir's desire to share ministry beyond the parish is particularly meaningful when we consider the words we prayed on Easter when we asked God to help us "live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us'."

may 2011 calendar

Lord God our Father,
through our Saviour Jesus Christ
you have assured your children of eternal life
and in baptism have made us one with him:
deliver us from the death of sin
and raise us to new life in your love,
in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
