House of Bishops Meetings Concludes

The Episcopal Church's House of Bishops concluded its six-day retreat meeting at the Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina, continuing the theme "selection, recruitment and formation of young leaders," preparing the church for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century.

"We talked about recruiting, forming and educating young leaders, and that has a great deal to do with inviting members of the church and leaders to get outside church buildings and structures to meet seekers," said Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Shori during a closing news conference on March 30. "That was a significant part of our conversation."

During their March 25-30 meeting, the bishops addressed several themes, including the relationship between Christianity and Islam, how to reach young adults with the gospel, and the Anglican Covenant, a set of principles intended to bind the Anglican Communion in spite of cultural and theological differences.

Karen Langley Headed to Africa

Karen Langley

Many of you know Karen from her volunteer work at St. Crispin's,and her most famous adventure as Karen "Fangley" as she was bitten by a snake last year.

"I have been accepted into the Young Adult Service Corps (YASC) that is a mission of the Episcopal Church. There are about 10 young adults this year from across the country that have been selected to serve and we will all be going to different places. My call is going to be taking me to South Africa, around Cape Town to work with an organization there called HOPE Africa. HOPE Africa is an organization that has sprung out of the Anglican Church of South Africa and offers a variety of programs to locals including vocational training, daycare services, education, soup kitchens, and programs that teach local women about small-scale farming practices. I will be leaving around August for my 12-month service! Service work is something that has been in my heart for a long time - I can't believe I'm actually getting to do it now! Also, if you want to include this. I have a blog set up for anyone that has further questions or wants to follow my journey. The address is:

St. John's Episcopal School Celebrating 60 Years in 2011

St. John's Episcopal School is celebrating our 60th Anniversary the whole year of 2011!  St. John's became a school in 1951 as an outreach of St. John's Episcopal Church and moved into the Church's old building on Classen.  In 1965 the school moved to its current location, 5401 N. Brookline, in order to accommodate its growing student population.

St. John's has many events scheduled through 2011 to celebrate our anniversary beginning with the school's annual auction which was The Black and White Ball   and was a great success.  All who came were delighted with the lovely décor, which was all done in elegant black, white and silver.  Delicious food was catered from Simply Scrumptious and the meal was topped off with tasty treats from our always profitable, highly competitive dessert auction.

Our mascot "Eddie" the eagle started traveling in January of 2011 visiting Episcopal School in the United States.  This has been great fun to see and hear about "Eddie's" adventures with other school children.  The school also held a t-shirt contest among our students to design a pecial shirt for our 60th anniversary.  The winner of the contest was Olivia Gross, 6th grade.  Her design for the shirts will be made for purchase this school year and then can be worn through next year's celebrations also.

In the fall of 2011 the school is working on planning a reunion celebration for all of it's alumni.  If you are a St. John's Episcopal School Alumni and would like to receive information about this event call the school office and give them your name and address so they can keep you informed.  St. John's services the greater Oklahoma City area ages infant to 8th grade.  Call our office or visit our website if you would like information about the school.  405-943-8583  www.stjohnsokc.com

Godly Play Training

GP new logo

We are offering a three-day Godly Play Core Training event at St. Paul's Cathedral, 127 NW 7th Street, Oklahoma City. Classes will be offered on:

Thursday, June 9th from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Friday, June 10th from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 11th from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Godly Play is an approach to religious education in which the teacher shows the various ways to use the sacred stories, parables and liturgical actions of the Christian faith as tools for approaching the larger questions of life. These components of religious language become the starting points for wonder and discussion. Following the Montessori tradition, the materials are always available for children to use in retelling the story, thus helping them to truly make the stories their own. Class structure follows the pattern of worship. There is time to share the story in community and time to respond individually (through art materials or the story manipulatives). At the end of the response time, the community of children comes together for prayers and a "feast." This method  was begun by the Rev. Jerome Berryman, an Episcopal priest, who studied  with Sofia Cavalletti, who pioneered the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program.

The cost for training is $295. However, don't let this be an impediment in your taking the training. Many smaller congregations have asked about this and we want you to be able to attend. Contact Sabrina if you need scholarship help. Additionally, we will help you look at alternative materials that help reduce the set- up costs. A registration form an brochure is on line.

You may check out Godly Play on their web site: http://www.godlyplayfoundation.org/newsite/Main.php

stewardship

Our Diocese is one of the sponsors of this year's conference of The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS).  It will be held June 3-4, 2011 at Camp Allen.  It is designed for clergy and lay leaders, and has tracks for people new to stewardship as well as workshops that present fresh and innovative strategies for seasoned stewardship leaders.  It is not often that the TENS conference is held so close to our Diocese, and it is also a cost savings that it is being held at Camp Allen rather than in a hotel.  Please take advantage of this training opportunity.  For a link to complete conference information please click http://www.tens.org/2011IGG/index.htm   Please contact Charlene Fabian, Stewardship Director (918-712-7002 or email at cfabian@epiok.org) if you have questions about the conference.

St. Crispin's Design Committee

Seeks Your Input

As announced at the Annual Diocesan Convention, a committee was formed to determine the needs of a new camp facility on the St. Crispin's property. This is being done to accommodate our needs for the future and to provide a safe space for children.  This new camp site is to be self-contained in one area, and will allow use our Conference facility at the same time summer camp is in session.

This group has met several times already and have formulated a list of items that we would like to see a part of the camp. However, we would love to have the collective wisdom of the Diocese as to what you would like to see a part of the facility.

Please email your suggestions to: Christianformation@epiok.org. We encourage you to think out of the box. If you don't suggest it, it might be left out!

Closing - Prayer for April

april showers

April showers may bring May flowers, but rain can also be inconvenient, cold, and gloomy. The following prayer focuses on spring rain in April as a tool to connect with God more deeply:

"God of life, thank you for the rain this April. As You nourish and cleanse the earth this spring, nourish and cleanse me also, that I might seek a deeper knowledge and love of You in all I do. Bless and keep me and all who glorify Your name! Amen."
