50th Anniversary
Episcopal Church of the Resurrection to
Celebrate 50th Anniversary

The Right Reverend Dr. Edward J. Konieczny will join Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in their 50th anniversary celebration on Sunday, February 27 at a special 10:30 am service.

"A 50th anniversary is a significant milestone in the life of any church, and we're honored to have Bishop Konieczny joining us for the celebration," said Reverend Michael Jasper, rector of the church. "In addition, he will be confirming 8 members and receiving 3 members of the church, so it will be a joy-filled morning. We are very interested in reaching out to past members of our parish and inviting them to join us the for the morning's celebration," Father Jasper said.

The celebration will begin at 10:30 am with worship services which will then be followed by a parish dinner and program. The theme for the celebration is Reflecting Christ - Past, Present and Future.

After an organizational meeting in December 1960, the first service of the new mission was held in February 1961.  Eight families made up the first congregation which met in the old KOCO studios located at Northwest 63rd and Portland.

"We used borrowed folding chairs, a portable altar and altar rail that we rolled in on a wooden platform made by one of the church members" recalls Pam Dean, one of the two original members who currently attend the church.  The church continued to meet in the KOCO studios for three years until the church building was completed."On November 22, 1962 we held a morning Thanksgiving prayer service on the land on Northwest Expressway where our new church was to be built," Dean recalls.

The first services in the new building were held on July 6, 1963 in the church located at 4848 NW Expressway - now the site of a Mardel Christian book store.

Established as a mission, the church received full parish status in April1967. Rapid growth required a building addition in 1968 and over the next 20 years, the church continued to grow. A capital campaign raised funds for the church's current building, located at 13112 N. Rockwell, which opened in 1989.

Today, Church of the Resurrection has more than 100 families who worship together and reach out to the community with an active Mobile Meals program, youth and adult programs, Bible studies and two services each Sunday morning. The Reverend Beth Bell and Reverend Gayle Bridges serve as deacons for the parish; Eric Hileman serves as music director and Mark Lee serves as youth director.

World Mission Sunday

2011 World Mission Sunday

Episcopal Church World Mission Sunday on March 6

"Lord, it is good for us to be here."

Resources in three languages are now available to observe 2011 World Mission Sunday, focusing on the contributions and needs of Episcopal Church missionaries and their ministries around the world.

World Mission Sunday, always observed the last Sunday after Epiphany, will be observed March 6. The annual observation was designated to increase awareness of, and participation in, the wider global mission of the Episcopal Church.

The theme for 2011 World Mission Sunday is "Lord, it is good for us to be here," from the March 6 Gospel reading of Matthew 17:1-9.

The Rev. David Copley, Mission Personnel Officer, explained there are over 60 missionaries currently serving in 25 countries as teachers, medical professionals, clergy, and other important capacities.

"They are recent college graduates and established professionals who have answered God's call to go and be in the midst of their brothers and sisters in another part of the world," Copley said.  "We are thankful for their presence and witness."

Copley pointed out that World Mission Sunday is an ideal opportunity to connect local congregations and parishioners with the wider church and its international work.  "You can learn about our missionaries - who they are, where they are, and what their ministries entail," he noted. "Sharing stories of Episcopal missionaries is another way of getting involved in our worldwide mission efforts."

World Mission Sunday is an ideal focus for Sunday School lessons, adult education, discussions and forums, prayers of the people and other events in the life of a congregation and diocese.

Resources for World Mission Sunday, available in Spanish and French, are here www.episcopalchurch.org/wmsunday and include bulletin inserts; suggested sermons; list of all current serving missionaries with their profile, photos, e-mails/blog addresses; ways to Encourage Global Mission; suggested reading; and info on serving as a missionary.
