To Our Readers -
It's almost summer and it's also the end of our fiscal year and that finds us reflecting on what we have accomplished this year. Probably our greatest success has been getting Project Safe Rockingham County up and running. Kudos to Giulio Dattero for all of his hard work. This is also the first year that ReDirections has operated without any funding from the State. It's been tough but we provided services to the Court, schools and community without having to make any cuts. We've enjoyed new relationships both within and outside of Rockingham County and appreciate the support that our board has given us. Most of all, we look forward to a new fiscal year with all the promise and challenges it will hold. Thanks to everyone who has worked with us this year.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!

On May 31, 2012, The Family Life Center, a small nonprofit located in Reidsville, closed its doors forever. Founded in 1969, by a group of local churches, The Family Life Center provided low cost counseling, anger management and domestic violence classes to persons who could not otherwise afford services well as to those referred by the Court.
Over in Wentworth, Raina Holliday and her staff are closing down the Day Resource Center (DRC). Funded primarily by the State's Criminal Justice Partnership Program (CJPP), the Day Resource Center not only worked with offenders on probation but also provided funds for local substance abuse, anger management and domestic violence programs. The DRC is closing because the State will no longer fund CJPP after this fiscal year.
Fortunately, the United Way of Rockingham County is concerned about the loss of these community resources. Because the anger management and domestic violence classes fall within the parameters of what ReDirections does, we will be talking to the United Way about our agency picking up the classes. If we are able to get the funding, we plan to begin offering the Anger Management classes beginning July 2, 2012 and the Domestic Violence classes once we become state certified which should be after October 1, 2012.
Still, as state and federal funds are cut and agencies close their doors, those nonprofit and faith based agencies that remain are being forced to do more with less. If everyone chose at least one nonprofit or faith-based organization to support with their time and money, agencies like The Family Life Center, which served this county for 49 years, might not become just a memory.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS
VR has local field offices and facilities that serve North Carolina's 100 counties. VR staff also directly serves businesses and other organizations by referring job ready individuals who are prepared for employment and who are well-matched for advertised jobs.
VR's employment services are among the most cost-effective of any offered by government. If you are interested in how "VR" can help you or someone you know, please contact the local Vocational Rehabilitation Office located in Wentworth, NC at 336-634-5611.
The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VR) housed under the Department of Health and Human Services provides counseling, training, education, transportation, job placement, assistive technology and other support services. These services are provided to eligible individuals with physical, psychiatric or intellectual disabilities to assist them with independent living and/or obtaining/maintaining competitive employment. If you are eligible and require VR assistance to obtain, maintain, or find a job; or if you are receiving SSDI or SSI benefits due to a disability and you intend to obtain or maintain a job, then Vocational Rehabilitation may be for you.
What Are Employment Services?
Getting or keeping a job is the main goal of the partnership between the consumer and VR. After an evaluation of the consumer's strengths, skills and experience, an individual plan for employment is jointly developed by the consumer and counselor, carefully monitored and, if needed, adjustments are made. CONGRATULATIONS TO PROJECT REENTRY -
One of our Community Partners
Project Reentry has been recognized by the National Criminal Justice Association as the 2012 Outstanding Criminal Justice program in the Southern region. Congratulations also to Rebecca Sauter who has overseen this program since its inception. This is the first national recognition of the good work Project Reentry, is doing and there is no question that there will be more awards to follow. |

COMMUNITY - 2 CRIMINALS - 0
On May 22. 2012, PSRC held its second call-in and 15 offenders were notified that their violent criminal behavior would no longer be tolerated by the community (120 of whom were present.) Community "moral voices;" local, state and federal law enforcem ent; and human service providers all spoke of the choices these offenders could make: prison, a coffin or the community.
Does this approach to violent crime work? Last November the first call-in was held. 14 gang offenders as well as members of all their gangs were notified. To date, only one has been charged with committing one of the four forbidden crimes (homicide, felonious assault, possession of a firearm by a felon and armed robbery). The other nine counties with Project Safe Neighborhood programs have also seen a significant decline in violent crime. The success of this strategy proves the power a community can have when it is involved. |
