Words to Inspire

I have never understood the saying, "To think outside of the box. "Why would anyone sit inside of a box and then think outside of it. Rather just  get out of box.

To Our Readers -

We are a small agency with limited staff and even more limited time to make sure that you get the best possible newsletter we can produce so we enlisted your help in writing some of the articles.

Thanks to Vernon Cardwell, one of Rockingham County's esteemed attorneys, for sharing his thoughts about mediation. Also, to Susan Steinberger, Senior Director of Business Development Services, Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc., our appreciation for giving us some very interesting information about her agency, one of PSRC's community partners. Finally, we included a little Easter humor in honor of the season as well as information about a great sale which benefits many local nonprofits.

Let us know how you like this concept.

                                      Enjoy these wonderful Spring days,

                                       Alexey, Bonnie, Joann and Guilio

In Praise of Mediation

Since the inception of [Mediation Services], I have been an enthusiastic supporter of the services it renders. I have often said this may be the only court affiliated program which actually pays for itself. When you consider the amount of time saved by Judges, District Attorneys and Court Clerks when cases are successfully mediated, savings on both time and money is quite substantial.

From a public policy standpoint if cases are mediated, you avoid a trial that many times causes other difficulties between those involved and in many instances will lead to further criminal charges. From a cost standpoint mediation cost is far less than court costs. It is my firm opinion that Mediation Services should be expanded to include a substantial part of all criminal charges.

ConnectionsThere are certain aspects of human behavior that cannot be controlled, altered or corrected by the court system. Mediation serves a higher purpose in that regard than the court system itself.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS

GoodwillGoodwill Industries of Central North Carolina, Inc. promotes the value of work through the provisions of work opportunities and career development services for people with employment needs.

In Rockingham County we currently operate two Community Resource Centers, Reidsville and Eden. Both centers offer job seeker assistance, career counseling, access to technology for job search (computer internet, and fax), and resume preparation assistance. Both centers also offer GED and ESL Classes, and well as Career Readiness Certificate Labs, Computer and Employability Skills classes. We are also fortunate to house the Project Re-Entry program at our centers and serve the former offender population who may find barriers to seeking employment and need specialized services for success. A variety of other classes are also available including CNA, Direct Care Worker training and other skills training. All of our classes are offered in partnership with Rockingham Community College. Our Eden Community Resource Center opened in October 2011 through a partnership with the City of Eden, Rockingham Community College, CenturyLink, and Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina.

Goodwill Industries operates Community Resource Centers in Greensboro, Asheboro, Reidsville and Eden with a Resource Center soon to open in Burlington (fall 2012). We operate Career Centers in Greensboro in our North Elm Street Store and a new facility in Oak Ridge. A new Career Center will open in Mayodan in the Fall 2012.  Shop at Belk and Help Your

favorite Nonprofit (we hope that's us)

Each year, once in the fall and again in the spring, Belk has a sale which helps nonprofits financially. This spring the sale is April 21st from 6-10 a.m. Those agencies which chose to participate are given tickets to sell. Here's what makes this sale so special:

·        Each ticket costs $5 which goes directly to the charity (us?).

·        The ticket purchaser gets $5 off of his/her first purchase. In fact, if purchasers buy more than one ticket, they can purchase the items individually with each ticket.

·        The ticket buyer can shop at any Belk's store anywhere there is a Belk's.

·        If the ticket buyer doesn't want to shop on Saturday, April 21st from 6-10 a.m. or can't shop that day, he/she can shop between Sunday, April 15th and Friday, April 20th. Just present your Charity Sale ticket to a Belk associate and ask them for details on reserving merchandise.

·        The first hundred customers who shop on Saturday will receive free Belk's cards valued from $5 to $1,000. Many items are only on sale for this sale.

Note: Coincidentally, ReDirections has tickets to sell. If you would like to purchase some, give us a call at 342-5238.
