"She Is Loveliness Itself " (Jane Austen's Emma) 36" x 28" (91.4cm x 71.1cm) Oil on Linen "The title of this painting is a line straight from Jane Austen's book Emma. Emma is a favorite character of mine because she views the world through fresh eyes. While she is in many ways mature for her age Emma makes some serious mistakes, mainly due to her lack of real world experience. She has few companions her own age and has not seen many things before. Her life is about exploring. Mr. Knightley is there to counteract her nature, and criticize her occasionally. However Emma never takes these lessons as pure fact; she explores and discovers on her own, often making a fool out of herself. Repeatedly Emma proves to be naive and ambitious, with an overactive imagination and a knack for getting herself into trouble. She believes with all her heart that she is right. What is more important, when Emma finds out something different from the stories she has heard, she does not question herself but instead the world around her.
Emma is a beautiful and intelligent young woman with too little to do and no ability to change her everyday existence. Her family is loving and her economic status is secure. This environment allows Emma to be snobbish, vain, and manipulative. However it is this privileged environment that allows Emma to retain the treasured outlook of a child. She questions the world around her and struggles to really understand what she is told, rather than just accept. When you combine this outlook with Emma's many admirable traits such as, love, wit, a sense of social responsibility, and an endearing gradual admission of error, you get a charming heroine who bares the seed of a true renegade."
