"First Encounter (The Dryads)" 30" x 40" (76.2cm x 101.6cm) Oil on Linen "I am captivated by the way the early Greeks saw a reflection of divinity in all the facets of ordinary nature. Every element was personified. As a result, impressions produced on man in the contemplation of nature, such as awe, terror, joy, came from a sense of reverence. This reverence for nature is what is missing in our society.
In this scene my main character, the great warrior so skilled in the ways of human interaction, is completely befuddled if not frightened by nature personified. My inspiration is directly from the John William Waterhouse painting 'Hylas and the Nymphs'. I love the level of uncertainty in the fate of Hylas. Nature can seem so delicate, but in the end man is no match."
