"Loved"

Oil on Linen

"It is evident in most of my paintings that I appreciate ornamentation. To me ornamentation is a visual representation of optimism, which of course lends beautifully to the notion of being in love.

In this painting I have placed my main character in an assemblage of fine lace, bows, and embroidered fabrics typical of the 17th and 18th century. Textiles of this time shared in the lavishness experienced by the visual and written arts.

What follows is a poem written in 1755, so delightful.

Flowing loosely down her back

Draw with art the graceful sack

Ornament it well with gimping,

Flowers, furbelows, and crimping

Let of ruffles many a row

Guard her elbows white as snow;

Knots below and knots above,

Emblems of the ties of love

Let her hoop extending wide,

Show what petticoats should hide

Garters of the softest silk

Stockings whiter than the milk.

- London Magazine, July 1755"

Caring for Original Oil Paintings

How do I clean my original oil painting?
    • Paintings that require cleaning beyond normal dust and surface dirt should be handled by a trained conservator.
    • For normal dusting, purchase a very soft bristled paint brush. Make sure the brush is clean and dry prior to cleaning your painting.
    • Gently use the brush to remove surface dirt and dust from the painting and frame. Do not "scrub" the surface with the brush, and be careful not to flex the canvas while cleaning.
    • Remove the painting from the wall and brush the back of the canvas and stretcher bars. Remember to avoid flexing the canvas.
Following these basic cleaning steps will keep your artwork beautiful. If your painting has loose or flaking paint, do not use the brushing technique described above. You should bring your painting to a local art conservator for advice, cleaning or restoration.
