"Daily Joys" 30" x 40" (76.2cm x 101.6cm) Oil on Linen
"One of architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart's most theatrical visual effects inside the Palace of Versailles is the famed Hall of Mirrors, in which seventeen mirror-clad arches are illuminated by the light from the seventeen arcaded windows that overlook the gardens. The hall is a 240 foot stretch of art reflecting art. A majority of my paintings follow the same principle. My "set designs" typically pay homage to the artists that inspire me; whether it be the inclusion of sculpture, buildings, gardens, or clothing design. In Daily Joys, the "reflections" have their own reflections that span several centuries.
The lead character is out for her daily stroll along the lake, but something in this private correspondence has completely captured her imagination. For me a handwritten letter is symbolic, a reflection of a time more deliberate, elegant, and gracious.
The set design is Marie Antoinette's Hameau built on the grounds of Versailles. She was inspired by the writings of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, so in the veracious fashion of a devoted patron of arts (political ramifications aside), the Queen commissioned her architect to construct this beautiful artificial village as a reflection of Rousseau's musings on the natural environment."
