WELCOME!

Mill Creek welcomes Kaya Callahan with her beautiful chestnut pony, Sonador.

Rebecca Raede, with her horse Ramazotti, is visiting and training with Mette through the end of September.  She will be competing in the Young Riders Championship.

September 17 is Mill Creek Games Day!

Bring your friends and family for our games day and potluck. Sign up for dishes on the bulletin board at the end of the L-Barn.

BalloonWe'll have horse games for our current Mill Creek riders (pole bending, bucket race and more) and non-horse games for everyone (egg toss, water balloon toss,  the Swedish balloon dance, etc.).

The fun begins at 3:30pm!

Good Luck at the Area VI Championships!

Good Luck

Many Mill Creek riders have qualified for the Area VI Eventing Championships at Copper Meadows September 9 - 11. Cory wishes you all the best of luck and wants you all to know how proud she and Robyn are of all of you.

However the show turns out, you've all had a great year and you should be very pleased!

Goodbye Bucky!

Bucky sold to Michelle Gough, who will be moving him to San Francisco in September. Bucky is very lucky to have someone who loves him as much as she does, however we will miss his kindness.

Congratulations, Michelle!

Blankets & Clipping

ClippersWinter will be here soon, so please make sure your blankets are clean - we like to use Diana Dover (818-674-8691) for cleaning & repair. Please be sure to write your last name in at least 2" letters on the inside chest flap of your blanket.

Please do not use heavy blankets until after your horses have been body clipped. If you clip at the end of September, you will need to clip again at the end of November. Our clipper is Ashley Taylor, (805) 558-5082.
Proper Treatment of Bee Stings

This time of year, we see lots of bees around the barn.  You may hear about all kinds of folk remedies for bee stings, but probably the best treatment is to immediately remove the stinger, followed by icing to prevent swelling.

You are having an allergic reaction to the sting if any of the following happens:

  • Swelling beyond the site of the sting
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Dizziness
  • Drop in blood pressure

If you experience any of the above symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Greetings!

Joe teaching an HHLA camp in August 2011

As many of you already know, Joe McKinley's last day at Mill Creek was August 31.  Joe has been teaching students and training horses at Mill Creek since 2006 and he will be greatly missed by me and by his students.

I wanted to take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate everything he has done over the years, including teaching the many Horses in the Hood camps (as in the photo on the left).  Joe was always the first to volunteer his help around the barn.  He is truly a team player.

Thank you Joe, for all you've done and all the best in your future endeavors.

Many thanks to our wonderful Horses in the Hood volunteers

We've had another successful summer of horse camps for inner city kids!

We've had another successful summer of horse camps for inner city kids and Horses in the Hood camps couldn't have happened without our many volunteers.  They include our dedicated student riders, Hayley Berman, Madi Weselis, Caroline Alford, Emma Dunn and non-Mill Creeker Rebecca, who gave up a week or more of their summer vacation to help out with this amazing program. We are especially thankful to our adult volunteers, Glory Fioramonti & Ted Ambrosini (pictured below). Of course, the camps wouldn't run without Mario Trejo to organize the horses and volunteers, Lorie Fee to handle the pizza party, photo developing and more, and Joe McKinley to capably teach the kids. Most of all, we'd like to thank HHLA Founder, Kathy Kusner, for making the camps possible.

Mill Creek Slumber Party!

A great time was had by all at the August 13 event

Close to 30 kids come out for our annual sleepover! We had tons of food provided by Cory and generous parents.  There was pizza, salad, watermelon, ice cream and s'mores in the evening and donuts, bagels, strawberries & watermelon for breakfast!

Many games were played, including sardines and water balloon toss. Denis and Romeo joined in for capture the flag. Mario and Carlos and their families also showed their support.

Thank you all for making this a great success! And of course, extra special thanks go to Vivian, Lorie & Lindsay for organizing & supervising the event!

In addition, Mill Creek riders garnered three first place team honors for the Training Level, Beginning Novice Level and Test Level Divisions. Complete results are available online at the address below.

School Horse News

We have to say farewell to probably everyone's favorite school horse...

Bambino Will Be Retired

BambinoCory is very sorry to report that our beloved Bambino has a torn suspensory ligament, which is quite serious in an older gentleman. He will retire to a large grass pasture with 20 other horses in Santa Ynez and hopefully he will be able to live a happy, comfortable life there. Cory says, "The idea of not having Bambino here saddens my heart deeply and I know many of you feel the same." Bambino will be at Mill Creek for about another month before moving to his new home. Be sure to wish him a fond farewell!

Welcome New School Horse Pippy!

Pippy, who just arrived at Mill Creek, is a 12-year-old, 15 hand Appaloosa gelding. For those of you around long enough to remember Babble, Pippy is like a larger version of Babble. He is named Pippy because Pippy Longstocking's horse was an Appy!

Pippy is very generously on loan to us from Sabrina Miller, a trainer in Northern California. Pippy is a very nice horse and does well with the most beginner riders through Novice level. He is a little jewel!

LuLu & Jordyn video

LuLu Shamberg & Jordyn Horwitz recently created a video tribute to their former ponies, Merry and Apollo.  In the notes the video on YouTube, the girls note:

"The reason we made this video for the two ponies together is because we went through everything at the same time; our first events, first shows, first trainings, first national championships, pas de deuxs, lessons, hill work, bareback days...we were/are always a pair and so were the ponies!

Now they have moved on to two fabulous little girls who we are sure are going to go far on them...and if they are watching this we do wish the best of luck to you and just know that these are the most amazing ponies you could ever ask for..."
