   Business Owners Uncertain

Dear ,

The latest survey of small business owners shows a lack of confidence in the US economy.  More than two thirds of small businesses do not plan on adding to the payrolls between 2011 and 2012.   Only 19% said they would be adding employees over that same period.  These numbers are consistent with the high unemployment figures from the latest Department of Labor unemployment numbers.   Small business owners are witnessing lower consumption behavior compared to pre-2008 purchasing.  As a result, small businesses are fearful that markets will not permit expansion (i.e. employment growth).

Businesses facing the challenges of slow growth can adjust their approach to expand market opportunities.  Changing marketing strategies by changing target markets and expanding into untapped markets are just a few of the options available.  For more information, contact your local office of the small business development center program.

WASHINGTON - The federal government awarded nearly $100 billion in federal contracts to small businesses in Fiscal Year (FY) 2010, showing an increase in federal prime contract dollars to small businesses for the second straight year after four years of decline.

The U.S. Small Business Administration announced today that in FY 2010 (Oct. 1, 2009 - Sept. 30, 2010), small businesses won a record $97.95 billion in federal contracts, or 22.7 percent of eligible contracting dollars. This marks the largest single year increase in more than five years, and is a significant improvement over FY 2009, when 21.9 percent of contracting dollars were awarded to small businesses. State Hopes to Improve Its Business Image

Long known for high taxes and regulatory burdens, California consistently ranks at the bottom among states in measurements of its business climate.

But as the state's sluggish job growth puts it behind many others in recovering from the recession, the heat is on legislators to take more seriously the need for California to be more business-friendly.

A new office of economic development, bills to help business owners clear regulatory hurdles and a legislative trip to Texas are among the efforts so far. It's less clear what practical changes may result, however.

"At least this year, the issue is being talked about," said Larry Venus, spokesman for state Republican Senate leader Bob Dutton. But "we're not seeing a lot of action."

A recent report from a nonpartisan research organization examines the claim that the state's policies are a drag on the economy and concludes that it's time to act. READ MORE
