Small Business California Survey

Dear ,

So far this year the economy has shown strong indications of recovery.  However, these signs are overshadowed by the impact of federal and state budget cuts.  As further cuts continue to draw down services, we will see student class size continue to grow, road conditions decline, and services we have come to expect disappear.  Furthermore, the overall level of consumption of products and services in the economy (especially in small communities) will also be impacted, as furloughed and unemployed workers reduce consumption behavior.

The entrepreneur is key to reversing the downward spiral.  Business creation and expansion is the best means of growing the economy in a sustainable manner.  This is accomplished through incremental steps such as exposing young children to concepts of entrepreneurship early in life; training youth to solve problems in creative ways (often before others have even identified the problem).   From Bill Gates to Mark Zuckerberg, these entrepreneurs created solutions to problems before we knew they existed.   As a result, today millions use their solutions (e.g. Windows, Facebook).

The final steps in helping grow a strong economy through entrepreneurship is one-on-one support to entrepreneurs.  The final stages of starting a business (e.g. commitment of capital) exposes the inexperienced entrepreneur to risks.  Thankfully, the Small Business Development Center provides one-on-one assistance to help entrepreneurs with critical advice and assistance.

California small firms added jobs in February

California small businesses increased their payrolls 0.4% in February, slightly higher than the national small-business job growth of 0.3%, according to a survey released today by Intuit, financial software producer.

Nationwide, small businesses created 50,000 jobs in February, based on aggregate and anonymous online employment data from approximately 60,000 companies with fewer than 20 employees. These firms use Intuit Online Payroll.

The data also indicate employees are working more hours but pay is down slightly.

January's numbers were revised revised down slightly to just under 0.3%, equating to 60,000 jobs added for the month and a 3.5% annual growth rate, Intuit said. Small businesses have added 800,000 jobs since Oct. 2009. READ MORE
