Greetings!
Happy New Year to you all. I hope that so far 2012 has been a good year for everyone. I am excited to read all the applications that were received for funding for FY2013. We received 40 applications this year and I am excited to have worked with many of you on these. The implementation committee is set to meet for our first look at the applications on February 10th.
With the strangely warm "winter" weather and low snow fall amounts that many of us are experiencing, I know that many walk and bike to school activities are ongoing. Congratulations to all of you that are making the efforts to walk and bike even when the weather is challenging.
I hope that you find something of interest in this month's newsletter. there are links to past webinars and newsletters now available as well as news from the National Center for SRTS. I plan to start featuring a MT SRTS program each month. Please send me details and pictures of the events that you have ongoing. I know we all love to see and hear about the fun things happening across Montana in our efforts to encourage our students to choose to walk and bike to and from school. |

P.A.C.E. 2012 (Promoting Active Children Everywhere)
| Many of you may be wondering where Paul Staso will be going this year on his PACE trek, and the answer is that he won't be doing one. Paul has decided that he needs to take 2012 off and take a year to rest, recover, and refocus. You can read more here about his decision to not do a trek this year along with his plans for the future. Paul has been doing these treks since 2006 and has been a huge encouragement to all who have participated and followed him. Please take a moment after reading the post to encourage Paul and let him know how his years of running have impacted you and your students' lives. Paul has been a great supporter of SRTS and we are proud to support him as he takes this break during 2012. We hope to see you back again in 2013! Rest well! In the void that will be left this spring we encourage each school to come up with a way to continue to promote physical activity during the spring semester. Maybe you can put together your own virtual trek and teach students about a specific area and have them "run" across it. While Paul and BOB will be missing from the scene you and your students can still have a great time challenging yourselves and learning about our world. Let us know your ideas and where you run this spring, we would love to share it here in upcoming issues. |

| National Center for Safe Routes to School Announces 26 Spring 2012 Mini-grant Recipients | Grants award federal funding to 26 U.S. schools, municipalities and organizations to increase walking and bicycling safety for students(CHAPEL HILL, N.C.) December 21, 2011 - The National Center for Safe Routes to School announced today the selection of its newest mini-grant recipients - a program made possible through the federal Safe Routes to School program. Twenty-six schools, municipalities and organizations from across the country will receive $1,000 to support projects designed to encourage students and their families to safely walk and bicycle to school. The mini-grant activities, many of which are driven by students, will occur during the spring semester of the 2011-2012 school year. "This is our fifth round of mini-grants, and we continue to be impressed with how communities can leverage a little bit of funding and a lot of commitment to develop new programs and to build upon strategies that may already be working well," said Lauren Marchetti, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School. "The community and student leadership recognized here exemplify the forward-thinking mindset that can lead to communities that offer a variety of transportation options." Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs are sustained efforts by schools, parents, schoolchildren, community leaders and local, state, federal and tribal governments to enable and encourage more children to walk and bicycle to school. The National Center, which serves as the clearinghouse for the federal SRTS program, received 212 eligible SRTS mini-grant applications from schools and community organizations nationwide during this fifth award cycle. Proposals selected in the highly competitive process distinguished themselves by identifying a need and proposing a sustainable program to address it. Proposed mini-grant activities include creating peer mentor programs for walking safety, teaching students how to repair their own bicycles and supporting bicycle helmet usage. Some schools will produce student-designed brochures and provide training for volunteers to enhance oversight of children on their way to and from school. "These mini-grant recipients represent a collection of great ideas and great need," Marchetti continued. "Some proposals were highly innovative, while others used road-tested methods. The flexibility and creativity shown by the communities who develop strategies to increase safe routes is what makes the mini-grant program work so well."
