August Needle

As we take great pride of being licensed for ten years, the heat here has been the PITS. Today it was 104' by 10 A.M.  Our dogs are all inside under air conditioners.  Stressed is putting it mildly! Along with the heat, dogs have been brought to our facilities unannounced, several dogs have been returned that have shocked us. We only had six to eight pets out of over 1,000 returned in ten years, but this month things changed with at least six returned.  One small dog had been in her home for nine years. Other dogs have been in their homes for over five years, some for over two years and others for nine months. The reasons vary from divorce to tragic car accidents. It has been very heart breaking to see these poor dogs confused, scared and some quit eating for several days.

Along with the heartbreak of failed adoptions, an afternoon storm finally nailed us but good. We had hail stones bouncing in our family room that came through double windows. Along with all the damage to our buildings, our Pet Pal van received a lot of damage. A tail light was busted and there are huge dents everywhere.  Luckily, we had Progressive Insurance Company which has been awesome to deal with. Now all we have to do is come up with the $500 deductible.... Help! After taking seventeen pets to be spayed/neutered and Pet Pals paying for fifteen of them, we are broke.  Thirteen of the kitties spayed/neutered were strays. If we didn't spay/neuter them, by next year there would probably be a hundred or more.  We would like to thank Lisa & Linda with C.A.R.E for helping with some of the costs.

As if this month hasn't been bad enough, we had to say good-bye to several of our furry family members. Being a strictly NO KILL Rescue and Sanctuary, we have a number of elderly pets here. We don't take death lightly and every loss just feels like we've been kicked in the stomach and our hearts broken.

If you don't hear from me, please don't think that I don't care. It has been very hard to sit, walk, bend or even breathe at times. After having major back surgery several years ago, my back has gone out again. Working with a number of dogs that weren't taught to walk on a leash, carrying buckets of water and sacks of pet food has once again, taken its toll.  I have an appointment with a spine and neurosurgery center this coming week.

Thank YOU for your donations and support which has saved countless lives with 1,080 through our doors and NONE being killed because of "issues".  I'm often asked what we do with extremely aggressive dogs. We WORK with them, gain their trust and show them love. Wild (feral) kitties are also worked with and turn into purring machines!  While we realize not every rescue or shelter has the facilities or expertise to work with problem pets, there is NO excuse not to contact other facilities who can deal with issues. Pet Pals has taken in many pets with severe issues from TRUE no-kill rescues. This is only possible with YOUR support, thank you from our pets and us!

Blessings,

The Needle!
Needle

Most of you are thinking this article is about killing pets, but you are wrong! From our very first newsletter dated March 2001 we have stressed the importance of having ID tags on your pets. Here is your chance to get a free ID tag and have fun at the same time!

Hidden somewhere in this newsletter is a picture of a needle like the one pictured with this article. Find the needle, be the first one to e-mail us with the location and we will send you an ID tag so your pet can get home and avoid a needle!

Thank you Sal for passing on your winning guess. Here was the response:

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is more than exciting!!  LOL  THANK YOU and Thank that lady that passed it on!!!!! :)   I can't believe this.  I can NEVER find anything!  LOL
Giz loves RED just like his mom  .... Thank you dear one!!!!
Barbara in TN
Love always,
:)

Last month's needle was hidden in the spay/neuter graphic towards the bottom of the page.    There is another hidden needle. Good luck everyone! (The needle at the top of this article is NOT the hidden needle. It is what you're looking for!)

Keep ID tags on your pets and NEVER leave them outside unattended.  WHY anyone would leave their pets outside when nobody is home is STUPID!!

Last month we also had an article about the number of bones in a dog which vary. Here is one cute answer:

Those extra Bones.

One is the bone of contention.  And the other is,  a bone to pick with you.

Consider yourself  lucky with these dogs. They will ever keep you on your toes.

 ANOTHER Reason to Buckle Up!

BRUNA'S LEGACY
by Ana-Maria Miranda

It was March 13, 1997. I put the car in the garage and went into the
kitchen. I was ab-so-lu-te-ly speechless!

Sitting in a little flower basket on the table, with her eyes on me,
was a gorgeous, but gorgeous, tiny apricot Poodle puppy! Needless to say,
it was love at first, during, last and eternal sight!

Bruna had made her entry into my life that day. I did not know it
then but I was the purpose of her existence.
Every night, before going to bed, we would say our prayers. "Dear
God, thank you so much for another lovely day. Thank you for my food, for
my fresh water, for my comfortable bed, for my freedom, for my naps, for
our canaries and our trees. And most of all Dear God, thank you for having
a mommy and a daddy who love me so much. Please God, take care of all my
friends who live in the streets and who are hungry or thirsty, who sleep on
the sidewalks, are mistreated, hurt, and don't have a mommy and a daddy who
love them like I have. I love you. Yours, Bruna."
I would kiss her heart and put her to bed.

In 2002, I had to take a training class in Washington, DC, for the
first three weeks in November. I came back on November 27.
The next day it was Thanksgiving and was extremely warm in Rio de
Janeiro. I had to go to my parent's house since my husband had left his
cell phone there. I took my car out of the garage because it had air
conditioning for Bruna, rather than taking my husband's car.
Bruna wanted to sit on my lap so I helped her. (I know it's wrong.)
Then she wanted to turn around and once again I lowered my eyes for a
fraction of a second and helped her. The truck in front of me stopped at
the light and I hit the truck. I didn't even brake. The air bag opened
and killed Bruna instantly against my left breast. I was literally
hysterical. I kicked the door open, and screaming, put her on the grass
and massaged her heart. She did not move. Bruna had left me.

I had to be taken to the hospital for exams. The only thing they
found was that despite the fact that the air bag had opened side-ways
towards my left breast killing Bruna, it was my RIGHT breast, arm, hand,
down to the waist, that were black and blue. A harmless breast lump I had
had for such a long time was now larger!

Looking at the hospital X-rays and at additional exams, all negative,
my doctor thought it best to take the lump out, regardless. He did not
know, but there was a cancer in the tissue opposite the lump.
He was speechless. He had to operate on me again to check the lymph
nodes. None were affected.

After the results came in, he called me and said, "Ana, God and Bruna
saved your life." I had four sessions of chemo and thirty of radiation.
It has been eight years and I am absolutely fine.

I took Bruna's body home from the vet after I left the hospital on the
day of the accident, bathed her as my tears fell on her body. My husband
and I buried her at home in a little garden -- Bruna's garden.
She had finished her mission on this planet. She was 6 years old --
an angel God had sent especially to save my life on a Thanksgiving Day.
My doctor says he remembers me often when teaching at the University.
"A correct diagnosis is vital to any illness," he tells his students, "and
there are many ways to make a diagnosis. Once I was helped by an adorable
micro apricot Poodle called Bruna."

Rescued Dogs are the BEST!!
Dog Saves

Tom and Marie Morgan, their 6-year-old daughter Taylor and dog, Maggie were simply taking a walk near the Lewis River. Taylor picked up a rock and ran toward the river to throw it.

The normally placid lazy river was moving at the speed of rapids. No issue - except that when Taylor went to toss the rock into the river, she lost her balance and fell in. Immediately, the current began to take her away, as reported at the Morton Report.

Tom said that he watched in horror as the waters swept his daughter away. In an interview with the The Morton Report he said, "I couldn't keep up with her, the water was too quick. I was running as fast as I could along the edge when Maggie bolted past me for about 30 yards and then leaped into the river. I lost sight of both of them for a second and then I saw Maggie with Taylor's jacket collar in her mouth trying to swim towards the bank. The river took them down about another hundred yards before Maggie was able to reach the bank. Even though they went under a few times she didn't let go once. If it hadn't been for Maggie, we would have lost our daughter."

As unbelievable as that may seem, the Morgans were not the only witnesses to the incredible rescue. An eyewitness was jogging by, "The dog sprinted and jumped about 12 feet out into the river just in front of the child. They both went under and when they came up the dog had her jacket in its mouth and was dragging her to the bank. The dad ran into the water's edge and grabbed the other side of the child's jacket and they both dragged her up onto the grass. I have never seen anything like it."

Adding to the story, incredibly, this wasn't the first time Maggie played Lassie. About two years ago she rushed into the house, breaking the screen, barking as if she had gone crazy. The Taylor's followed their panicked dog to find their daughter lying on the grass, having trouble breathing. She had been stung on the neck and is highly allergic to bees.

I you don't think an adopted dog bonds well to the family, think again. Maggie is adopted. Tom explained, "We visited an animal shelter and were walking down a row of cages and all the other dogs were either barking or running around but one was just sitting quietly in the middle of its cage as if waiting and Taylor stopped and said, 'Hello Maggie, we're taking you home."

The police department has nominated Maggie for a Commendation of Bravery award, but this is where her story takes a sad turn. Maggie may not be alive to receive it.

"We found out last month that Maggie has been diagnosed with Hemangiosacrcoma (a highly malignant cancer which preys on blood vessels) and will not be with us in a few months," said Tom. "We haven't told Taylor yet as she will be devastated. It will be the hardest thing we have ever had to do. The two have an inseparable bond that is based on real love. We owe our daughter's life to her."

It seems some cancers are occurring in dogs more frequently, and this deadly cancer is one.

A ZILLION TIMES!

Dognapping! The Economy Is to Blame for a Rise in Dog Kidnapping   By Brad Tuttle <http://moneyland.time.com/author/bradtuttle/> August 23, 2011
Pets and the economy have a curious relationship. Overall spending in the pet industry has risen steadily over the past few years, even as the economy has struggled. But spending on pets isn't entirely recession-proof, as demonstrated by the increase in owners who are choosing cremation when their pets pass away, rather than electing for trendy (and more expensive) cemetery plots and burials. Now the tough economy is giving owners extra reason to watch their pooch's back - because there has been a rise in dogs being stolen or kidnapped.

Since the recession began, a laundry list of quirky economic indicators has been observed - tooth-fairy payments, hot waitresses, men's underwear sales, sales at thrift stores and married men having affairs, to name a few.

Here's one to add to the list: according to USA Today, the number of dogs that have been snatched from unsuspecting owners has spiked. During the first seven months of 2011, per the American Kennel Club (AKC), there were reports of 224 stolen dogs, compared with 150 during the same time period last year. That's a rise of 49%. Overall last year, there were 255 dogs reported stolen, up from 162 in 2009 and 71 in 2008.

What's behind the rise in dognappings? Lisa Peterson, AKC spokeswoman, tells USA Today flatly, "The motivation is money and economics."

Stolen dogs are often resold over the Internet. The dognapper may also wait to see if the owner will post a reward for the safe return of the dog, then collect the cash while making up a story about where the dog was located. That's an easier crime to pull off than alerting the owner about an official dognapping and demanding a ransom. Other thieves just want a dog for their kids or themselves and don't want to purchase or adopt one.

Peterson says that Yorkies, Pomeranians and other smaller breeds are the most likely dogs to be stolen. Why them? They're especially popular nowadays among dog lovers, and because of their tiny size, they're easier to snatch and hide.

While many thieves will steal anything that can be easily transformed into quick cash, some specifically target dogs, says Peterson:

"We've seen car break-ins with the dog taken, but the GPS and laptop left."

DOGS and The Economy

http://www.examiner.com/dogs-in-akron/dogs-and-the-economy

The economy impacts so many aspects of people's lives and dogs are being targeted for financial gain.

For the first seven months of 2011, reports of stolen dogs rose 49%, according to the American Kennel Club. About 224 were snatched, compared with 150 in the same period last year. In 2008, 71 thefts were recorded by the AKC's database of customer and media reports, which rose to 162 in 2009, and 255 in 2010.

Thieves are blatantly taking dogs from yards, from cars, shelters, parks, streets, and anywhere else where they're left unattended. They then try to "sell" them on the internet utilizing sites such as craigslist, sell them at swap meets or flea markets, and even have set up roadside stands. Others will try to collect a reward after seeing a flyer and contacting the owners, pretending they "found" the dog. Still others just want a free pet for themselves, their child, or someone else close to them. Small breeds like yorkies, pomeranians, and chihuahuas are being targeted because they're easier to take and easier to hide.
