Summer Greetings!

HELP!! We hope you're having a wonderful summer. Ours is not going so well. As usual, we're busy taking care of pets, re-stocking pet food and making trips to the veterinarians. Last month I was going to tell you about taking three dogs to the vet, but I forgot....Oops!

One little dog, Lovey, was whimpering when she ate. The only thing I could think of was she broke a back tooth. It turned out she had a string wrapped around the back of her tongue attached to a wad of gunk partially down her throat. When she ate and swallowed it cut off circulation to her tongue. Had I put off taking her to the vet, gangrene "gang green" probably would have set in. Lovey has recovered and is doing great.

The second dog was Fanny who I hoped would be adopted by now. She had to have emergency ear surgery. Within a couple hours double hematomas caused her ears to fill up with blood. Here is how ear hematomas are taken care of:

The ears are cut open, stitched and left open. Luckily, she has now recovered.   The third dog was "just" a dental.

Last week we weren't so lucky. Petunia, Pom, had a second vet visit and x-rays showed she has a total collapsing trachea. Petunia is on medicines and appears to be doing better. Lamb Chop, poodle new to rescue, had his eyes examined and an expensive eye salve was purchased. Oh my, the list goes on..... We have a bunch of old dogs here who have either needed surgery, dentals or medicines.  Just last week our vet bill was over $500.... Yikes, we have 25 days to come up with the money or pay the interest on a credit card, HELP!

Things can't get any worse right? Wrong! Yesterday a dog was returned that had been adopted out NINE years ago. Katie is in bad shape. She was groomed but her teeth are in such bad shape she stinks. Of course, when a dog has bad teeth they can't eat properly so Katie only weighs 3 pounds 13 1/2 ounces. She has been eating wet food almost non stop. Hopefully, she will gain some weight so a dental can be done which is scheduled for Monday, June 20th. Katie is also blind in her right eye which I will have the vet look at.

TODAY a small dog, Simon, is vomiting blood. A veterinarian has been contacted. We're following doctor's orders. It's going to be another long night.

More vet bills.... <sigh>  Some of you have gone above and beyond to help us save these lives so I hate to ask, but even if you could spare a couple bucks, we would REALLY appreciate it and so would Katie, Simon and the other furkids. Thank you!

Katie

Shutting Down Pet Pals!
Last month's article does NOT mean Pet Pals is shutting down!! Please read the article in its entirety. CLICK HERE :-)

However, this doesn't mean that we wouldn't like to shut down. Pets not  being killed would be AWESOME...... someday!

        The Needle

Needle

Most of you are thinking this article is about killing pets, but you are wrong! From our very first newsletter dated March 2001 we have stressed the importance of having ID tags on your pets. Here is your chance to get a free ID tag and have fun at the same time!

Hidden somewhere in this newsletter is a picture of a needle like the one pictured with this article. Find the needle, be the first one to e-mail us with the location and we will send you an ID tag so your pet can get home and avoid a needle!

Lorie in Oklahoma was last month's winner. Congratulations Lorie! The needle was hidden along the stem of the flower at the bottom of the newsletter.

There is another hidden needle. Good luck everyone! (The needle at the top of this article is NOT the hidden needle. It is what you're looking for!)

Keep ID tags on your pets and NEVER leave them outside unattended.  WHY anyone would leave their pets outside when nobody is home is STUPID!!

Number ONE Cause of Death...

What is the number one cause of death in cats?

Feline diabetes, AIDS, and Kidney failure......

Nope, the leading cause of death in cats is not getting adopted.

After JayJay had been in a home for SIX YEARS he was turned into a kill facility instead of this sickening person picking up the phone to return him to our facility. He was featured in our February newsletter:
JayJay is now in an AWESOME home and this picture warms our hearts. Thank you Nadine!

Recently we received e-mails about six dogs who were KILLED instead of being returned to Rescues. There are bad people everywhere. When we put our hearts into a pet and promise them they are now safe, is it any wonder we screen our homes to the hilt and REALLY appreciate updates? PLEASE, if you have adopted from us, drop us a note, thank you!
