Hello!
Happy Autumn! So much has happened at Pet Pals this last month and especially this last week, I don't know where to begin. First, I want to say THANK YOU for all the support. I've received e-mails from people I hadn't heard from in 14+ years! Most people in this area didn't even have computers back then! Barb, "HeresBarbi" from a yorkie chat group (The New Yorkie Times) was a pleasant surprise. Wish I had time to "chat" now days, but time is very limited as you know from the 989 unanswered e-mails, my apologies!
In the last month we had a number of adoptions and pets come in. One very special little girl kitten, Sunrise, came in from a volunteer named Cindy. Her neighbor was just going to dispose of this little two week old life whose Mother was killed.
Since Cindy wasn't experienced with kittens and worked full time, she called needing our help. Kittens need to be fed every 2-3 hours and since I saw many sunrises the name fit! Thank you Cindy for helping her. Yes, she's black with an orange spot on her back just perfect for Halloween. Cindy will adopt her when she is spayed, microchipped and vaccinated.
This last week two mini horses we had been boarding here for the last six months left and a boarded cat left. Of course, two dogs came in the same day. <sigh> One dog was abandoned when her owner moved. She is a very sweet little brindle Boxer that we've named Brindi. Of course, she is not spayed, in heat, has had puppies and is only about three years old.
The second dog brought in had been running along the highway as a stray. He jumped in the man's vehicle and befriended him immediately. The man knew we were the only ones that would not kill him so he immediately brought him here at 5:30 in the evening.
This poor dog is not so nice and that's putting it mildly! I've named him Malone because he just wants left alone! So far we've only managed to handle him with a catch pole which he is trying to bite, not good.
Malone is a McNab, Blue Heeler, pit bull cross. Malone doesn't seem to know any commands and only glares while growling and I have no doubts he would bite you in a heartbeat.
Jan and Mischelle, previous adoptors from Oregon, called this morning to give some advice. Mischelle offered to send me a spare leg! (She lost both of hers in an accident) Not funny Mischelle!! LOL

Thank you again for your continued support. With more pets to spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinate, the vet bills never end. We simply could not save these lives without your help, THANK YOU!

Why do we all think "Oh, it won't happen to ME!
This article was SO popular in last month's newsletter that a web page has been set up. Click on the picture to visit the new site.
So many people have been writing wanting to know where they could purchase seat belts, we're in shock.
E-Bay and Amazon.com are excellent places to purchase seat belts. THANK YOU for caring about your family members when they are traveling! |

Saying GOOD-BYE
This has been another heartbreaking time. A number of you have written and donated in honor of your family members who have gone to Rainbow Bridge. My deepest sympathies. We have also lost a family member this last month. His name was Lucky. Even though he was actually a valued member of dear friend and board member Dani's family, our hearts broke when he passed. Here at Pet Pals we have a pet cemetery filled with tears. In honor of those we loved, cement headstones are being made. If you would like our "recipe" here it is: Purchase stepping stone cement and pour it into molds sprayed with cooking oil, "Pam". We use generic because it's cheaper. Let the mixture set two hours or more depending on the consistency and then place cookie cutters in the cement. We have added beads which add color and depth. Glitter was also added. Click any of the pictures to visit an awesome site about Rainbow Bridge. Our hearts go out to you in your time of loss. Here is an e-mail we received:
Hi Linda - What unbearable sorrow to lose our sweet animals but how unthinkable not to have had them in our lives. Amazing how rich our lives are because of their presence and their love. What a gift they are. No wonder they take our hearts with them when they return to God, whose stamp they bear. They point us right back to Him with every moment of their lives. - Dani
An Indian legend says: " When a human dies there is a bridge they must cross to enter into Heaven. At the head of the bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based on what they know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridge...and which are turned away."
"If your dog doesn't like someone you probably shouldn't either." "Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened."
"I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. "God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't You do something?" God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly. "I have done something," He replied. "I created YOU." ~ Jim Willis ~ "The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing." Albert Einstein "With some training, man can be dog's best friend"- unknown

12 Things You May Not Know About Pet Death
1. Pets die with their eyes open. It takes active muscle control to close the eyes. (The same is true of humans.)
2. Many pets "hide" when they are sick. This is a defensive mechanism to prevent predators from spotting them in a vulnerable state.
3. Many pet owners think that when a pet goes off to "die" it is a peaceful death but many times (most times) it is not. Many pets will suffer for hours or even days before they die.
4. When humans die, the sense of sight is the first to go and hearing is the last. The same is thought to be true for dogs and cats.
5. Many pets will continue to breathe and have muscle movements after their heart has stopped.
6. The oldest living dog documented was an Australian Cattle-dog named Bluey who was owned by Les Hall of Rochester, Victoria, Australia. Bluey was obtained as a puppy in 1910 and worked among cattle and sheep for nearly 20 years. He was put to sleep on November 14, 1939 at the age of 29 years, 5 months.
7. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the oldest cat on record was a domestic longhair by the name of Spike. Until 2001 when he passed away at the ripe old age of 31 (that's 140 in human years, but who's counting?), Spike was still happily chasing spiders and enjoying life. Spike lived in Dorset, England with his owner, an aromatherapist named Mo Elkington. (Another British cat was recorded to be 34 years old when it died in 1957, but it was not documented by Guinness.)
8. Dogs do not suffer from myocardial infarction (heart attack) as people do. In dogs, the term is typically used to either define a collapsing episode (more accurately termed as syncope or loss of consciousness) or to describe sudden death of an animal in terms that people can understand.
9. Humans are not the only species to bury their dead. Both chimpanzees and elephants have been observed covering the bodies of deceased members of their groups. Scientists have observed elephants gently touching the skulls and tusks of other elephants long after the bodies have decomposed.
10. The pharaohs of ancient Egypt believed that animals and people shared the afterlife so they wanted to be buried with the animals that shared their lives. Beloved pets were frequently mummified and placed into tombs with their owners.
11. Pets get almost every disease that humans get including diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and cancer.
12. When our beloved pets die many people choose to bury them nearby, in the backyard or garden. While this may bring us great comfort it may also be against the law. In many areas, government regulations prohibit this practice. So find out what is permitted in your area before you bury your pet.

Mouse in the House!
Forget the traps! I too hated the idea of the killing but wanted the mousie out. Went on line and learned a way to do it. I have used it to catch about five over the last couple of winters. Sounded ridiculous at first- didn't even want my husband to know I was trying it for fear he would laugh and hurt himself. But it worked! Forget the traps! Save a couple of cardboard rolls from the paper towels -balance them half on the counter, the other half poised over a tall can or garbage basket set on floor underneath (something mousie can't jump out of; remember they can surprise you with the height of their jump) poise apiece of cheese or bread on the end of the cardboard roll and Voila! Mousie goes after morsel and he and the cardboard roll tumble into garbage can. Next morning, you can take him over to the neighbor's yard and release him! Just kidding- set him free wherever!

The Needle
Most of you are thinking this article is about killing pets, but you are wrong! From our very first newsletter dated March 2001 we have stressed the importance of having ID tags on your pets. Here is your chance to get a free ID tag and have fun at the same time!
Hidden somewhere in this newsletter is a picture of a needle like the one pictured with this article. Find the needle, be the first one to e-mail us with the location and we will send you an ID tag so your pet can get home and avoid a needle!
Last months' winner was disqualified because he was a Pet Pal board member so we will try again. The Needle last month was hidden in the picture of Peggy!

Urgent need for Rescues
Wyatt Earp before he was groomed. His feet couldn't be found in the feces and fur. He almost died. |
Most people don't have a CLUE what comes through our e-mail boxes DAILY.
These pets need help and it breaks our heart that we can't save them all. Due to breeders wanting to continue a life of misery for these souls, most yahoo lists are restricted to Rescues. As I've said a million times, the breeding NEEDS to STOP. Puppy Mills SUCK! Click the pictures to read and see more.
A volunteer, who was here visiting, was surprised when she counted over 600 dogs needing immediate help.

Oh NO, We're Out of Treats! What do you do when the furkids are out of treats? You start baking of course! Here is an excellent site with recipes: Dog treats Don't be afraid to mix your own recipe. Your furkids will never know you exchanged ingredients! We made up the following recipe with what was on hand: 1 Goose egg, beaten 3 C. Flour 1/2 C. Powdered Milk 1 can Beef dog food 1/3 C. Honey 1 Tbsp. Minced Garlic 1 Tbsp. Parsley Flakes Mix thoroughly and drop onto greased cookie sheet & press with a fork or your hand until very flat. Bake 250' to 300' for 50 minutes. Tip of the day: Do NOT offer your sticky goo covered fingers to 12 dogs. They will try to grab a finger and run!

Thank you, Christine!
We would like to give a special thanks to volunteer and new board member, Christine Knittle. She has not only adopted two pets but comes here monthly from Casper, WY and stays in our guest bedroom for several days at a time to help. Christine is pictured here with newly adopted Honey Butter. Christine has Cervical Dystonia. You may click her picture to read more about this disease.
While most people would complain and opt for government handouts, Christine is an inspiration. She not only works full time but helps save lives as well! Christine brings our kitties food or other items we are in need of.
Christine wants everyone to click into this site that she set up: The Animal Rescue Site **Click into Wyoming (WY) and type in Pet Pals ** Even though we know we won't win against the larger facilities, we may win a weekly drawing.
During Christine's last visit she helped care for pets, scrubbed floors, walls, windows, painted a fence and helped paint our sign which is pictured below. Christine, you are TRULY an inspiration!

Brucellosis....YIKES!
Here I am pictured with husband, Larry, and a rescued Doberman, Pixie. Click the picture to read about Brucellosis. A recent e-mail was about a puppy mill owner who killed over 200 dogs due to Brucellosis and a warning about rescued puppy mill dogs that were sold/rescued that had this terrible disease.
Most of you don't know I had Brucellosis at a young age. Originally diagnosed as terminal Leukemia and hospitalized, a couple years later I had a second surgery to remove scar tissue thinking it was from tonsillitis. Then after having double pneumonia and going into a coma, I was finally diagnosed as having brucellosis. I received this blood disorder from drinking unpasteurized cow's milk. A doctor told me I wouldn't live to an old "normal" age.
Brucellosis is not something to take lightly. Pets adopted or rescued from eastern states especially need to be tested.

Pumpkin & Gino
 From our mail bag:
Linda - here is the story of our adopting Pumpkin and Gino
Losing a pet is one of the hardest things my husband and I have gone through. Though our Chevy, a Bichon Shih Tzu cross, left us due to old age. We grieved deeply for her and weren't sure that we'd have another pet. Then I saw Pumpkin and Gino on a web page and fell in-love. I called Pet Pals right away and the answering machine picked up. I explained that although we were from Canada, I was really hoping that we'd be able to adopt the beautiful kitties that I had seen. When I showed Wayne their pictures - he too was smitten. After filling out forms, crossing fingers and countless phone calls we found out that indeed we could adopt these two sweethearts. Now some people may think we were a little crazy but we set in motion a plan to drive down to pick up the newest members of our family. Some even questioned why we didn't just try to get them shipped up - long story short we wouldn't have a 2yr old "shipped up" and these two beautiful cats were now members of our family! Two years old and they had already lived in three different places (that we know of), my heart broke for them. So we hit the open road and traveled the eighteen hundred and some miles to pick them up and bring them home. We've now had Pumpkin and Gino for over a year and let me tell you - adopting them was one of the best things we ever did. They bring so much happiness and joy to our home I can't even put it into words. Worth every mile and minute it took us to come get them. I can't even think about what might have happened to them if Pet Pals hadn't been there to bring us together.
Thanks again, Laurie
(Editor's note: Thank YOU Laurie for another happy ending story!)
