Ag Biz Planner Participants Graduate Seven participants from across Carolina Farm Credit's territory recently graduated from the 3rd Ag Biz Planner Program. The program, a college-level, online course in Farm Credit University (FCU), was a collective effort of five farm credit institutions serving young, beginning, small and minority farmers in NC, VA, WVA and MD.
Carolina Farm Credit participants were assigned a loan officer to serve as their mentor throughout the course. Highlights of the program include modules that cover business and personal financial planning, understanding income statements, cash flow, and the smart use of credit on the farm. Each participant completed a business plan for their operation and concluded the class with a conference in Raleigh lead by Dr. David Kohl. Featured speakers were Jason Davis, State FFA Coordinator; Matt Lohr, Virginia Department of Agriculture/Commissioner; Ray Starling, NCDA/General Counsel; Johanna Kramer, Social Media Expert; John Stewart, State FFA President.

Spring Customer Appreciation Events
In April, member-borrowers of Carolina Farm Credit will receive patronage refunds checks for 2011. The amount of patronage to be paid and revolved in the future for borrowers of Carolina Farm Credit totals $15 million. Borrowers received a refund of 20 percent of the interest that accrued on their loans in 2011. A cash refund of $4.6 million will be paid in April, and the remainder will be placed in allocated capital accounts for future revolvement.

Local Student Receives Scholarship from the Cooperative Council of NC

Clara Ervin of Catawba, NC has been selected to receive the 2012 Jim Graham Cooperative Leadership Scholarship, presented annually to a high school senior by the Cooperative Council of North Carolina.
The winner of the $1,000 college scholarship is selected from participants in the Cooperative Council's Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp, held each June at the NC FFA Center at White Lake. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, leadership and community involvement. Carolina Farm Credit sponsored Ervin to attend Co-op Camp in June 2011. She also attended the National Institute on Cooperative Education (NICE) in Indiana at Purdue University last July.
Ervin will graduate this June from Bandys High School in Catawba, North Carolina. She plans to attend Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, NC, to major in Agriculture Education.

Concordia Envirothon Team
The Concordia Christian Day School Envirothon team, sponsored in part by Carolina Farm Credit, was featured in the Hickory Daily Record and the Observer News Enterprise wearing their Farm Credit t-shirts. This is the first year that Concordia has had an Envirothon team. The team went on to participate in the state competition and finished 34th!

Farm Credit Names New Partners to its National Contributions Program Farm Credit, a national provider of financing and related services to agriculture and rural America, awarded $420,000 in the first quarter of 2012 to young, beginning, small and minority farmer organizations, agricultural education programs, and other agricultural industry advocates. Farm Credit's National Contributions Program provides $2 million a year in funding to support the lives and livelihoods of farmers and ranchers. The national funding complements local and regional giving provided by Farm Credit entities across the United States and in Puerto Rico. Social Media Workshop for Farmers
Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) is offering Social Media for Farmers workshops designed especially to help farmers reach new customers and expand their farm businesses. Dates and locations are listed below. All workshops are limited to 25 participants to allow for hands-on, one-on-one training. Click here for more information and to register.

Renewable Energy Grants Available for WNC Farmers:
