Medications
Collected in Otoe County
Otoe County citizens disposed of 82 pounds of expired or unused medications on Saturday, October 29th in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency's third National Prescription Take-Back Day.
Volunteers collecting medications at the City Hall in Nebraska City included: Kent Blum and Kermit Holmes from the Nebraska City Elks Chapter, and Chad Peterson, Dana Schebaum, Chris Bando and Clayton Jones from the Nebraska City.
This is Otoe County's third prescription take-back event. Activities such as this keep prescription medications out of the water supply and out of the hands of people who might use them for non-medical purposes.

Increasing numbers of teens are using prescription and over-the-counter medications to get high. Many parents don't know enough about this problem, and many teens don't understand the dangers.
Parents can download a guide from the DEA Website that helps parents understand and identify the current medications teens are abusing. "Prescription for Disaster" is available for download in English or Spanish. The booklet presents prescription drug basics, includes information about commonly abused drugs, lists steps parents can take to keep their teens drug free, and more.

In a recent letter, Dianne Riibe, Executive Director of Project Extra Mile in Omaha said, "High-octane products such as Four Loko and Colt 45 Blast are currently available in stores across Nebraska. These super-sized products contain the equivalent of four-to-five 12-ounce cans of beer in one single 23.5 ounce container. They come with high alcohol content (11 to 12 percent) and are priced cheaply.
"Alcohol Justice, formerly Marin Institute, in California, has asked for health advocates to make public comments against Phusion Projects, makers of the infamous Four Loko beverages, and its proposed agreement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to discontinue marketing its new "supersized," re-sealable containers...
