Growing Great Kids

September is National Baby Safety Month

To promote National Baby Safety Month, Growing Great Kids in Southeast Nebraska would like to share SAFETY TIPS for mealtime to prevent your baby/toddler from CHOKING:

  • Make sure your child sits while eating. Don't let kids eat while lying down, walking, climbing, or running.
  • Mash or grind food so it's soft enough for your baby to gum or chew.
  • At the finger-food stage, cut fruit, veggies, meat, and cheese into pea-size pieces.

Interesting Fact: The most common choking foods for kids under five are . . .

Hotdogs

Chunks of meat

Whole Grapes

Raw carrots

Hard candy

Popcorn

Ice cubes

Potato or corn chips

Marshmallows

Apple slices

Melon balls

Chunky peanut butter

Peanuts (nuts of any kind)

How do you protect your child's safety when there are 30,000 tons of potentially dangerous toys pouring into the United States from foreign countries every year? Foreign toys account for 95 percent of the toys sold in the U.S. every year -- and many of them cause serious injuries to children. Check out the report.

Don't forget About Children's Health with Backpacks     Most studies have shown that no more than 10 to 15 percent of a child's body weight should be contained in their backpack. What else should you know?

Seat Check Saturday

Parents and caregivers are urged to have their children's car seats checked on  National Seat Check Saturday, September 24. As part of Child Passenger Safety Week (September 18-24), certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to inspect car seats and provide hands-on advice free of charge.

Have you heard about LATCH?

car seat bannerEvery year, thousands of young children are killed or injured in crashes, mainly because 3 out of every 4 children in child safety seats are not properly secured, or even worse, not restrained at all. Don't let that happen to your child. Nearly every car seat and most vehicles manufactured since September 1, 2002, are required to have the LATCH system. LATCH makes it easier to get the child seat in right - the first time and every time. Find out how to properly use the LATCH system. Check the laws in your state.
