 | | Judge O'Neal after swearing in the new CASA volunteers |
Deb Dominguez, Susan LeGrand, and Pam Rademacher recently completed a 30-hour Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteer training and were sworn in by Judge Robert O'Neal on August 10th to serve as volunteer advocates in Otoe County Juvenile Court.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court. In an overburdened social welfare system, abused and neglected children often slip through the cracks among current cases. CASA volunteers change that. Appointed by judges, CASA volunteers typically handle just one case at a time and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home.
CASA was established in Otoe County in the fall of 2009 and currently has 13 volunteer advocates, including: Mel Halkens, Sally Juilfs, Jan Marion, Danny Oakes, Julie Oakes, Norm Rolfing, Heidi Rosane, Deb Stieren, Jo Vasa, and Lisa Wagner. Otoe County CASA Advisory Committee Members are Colin Albers, Brooke Chaney, Bill Davis, Rena Holben and Christy Merryman. CASA volunteers make a one year commitment to the program at a minimum and complete 30 hours of training.
Find out how you can become a CASA volunteer by going to our web site at www.p4oc.org or calling Mari at 402-873-6343.

This article has been re-printed from the August 9,2011 Nebraska City News-Press The National Mentoring Partnership has identified 15 million youth in need of a mentor. Thousands of these youth live in Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas. In an effort to help close the gap, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Coach Bo Pelini, Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder, Kansas University Coach Turner Gill, Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads and University of Iowa Football Coach Kirk Ferentz have issued a friendly challenge to see which state can recruit the most new mentors. Any new mentor application that is received between August 1 and November 21 will count toward the "score" of the respective state with cumulative totals updated each month. Contact Stacie Higgins at 402-873-6343 for more information about mentoring through TeamMates in Nebraska City.
