FAMILY NIGHT OUT FOR FUTURE PALMYRA 7TH GRADERS Transitioning from elementary school to the secondary level is a big step in the lives of young students. In the Palmyra-Bennett school district, that means moving from the elementary building located in Bennett to the 7-12 building located in Palmyra. To help ease that transition, Christy Merryman, the Secondary Guidance Counselor at Palmrya High School, organizes an evening for the whole family to aid in the transition. Teachers, administrators, and upperclassmen are on hand to help orient the families of the rising 7th graders.
Students who will be entering 7th grade at Palmyra High School next fall attended a 7th grade orientation with their families on April 28t at the school. Thirty-six of the 37 families planning to enroll attended. The evening began with a family meal catered by Valentino's. While students toured the building, met teachers and learned about life at middle school, parents were involved in a program to help their students transition, including a "Power of Parents" presentation from Simera Reynolds, Executive Director of MADD Nebraska, an Internet Intelligence and Safety presentation from Suzanne Whistler, Educational Service Unit #4, and enrollment information from Christy Merryman, Palmyra High School Guidance Counselor. Parents were also given the opportunity to sign up for the Safe Homes Network. Children's activities for visiting siblings were provided by the Student Council. |
Congratulations to all our Seniors - Party Sober this graduation

Sheriff Jim Gress and Police Chief Dave Lacy recently sent letters to seniors to congratulate the class of 2011 and encourage them to celebrate their graduations safe and sober. Graduating from high school is one of the most momentous occasions in a person's life and a cause for celebration. Local law enforcement will step up their patrols in May to assure that people celebrate safely. Otoe County has maintained a good safety record over the past several years, with no injury or fatality related accidents and few arrests, and they certainly intend to keep it that way.
High school graduations are scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at Johnson County Central, Saturday, May 14, at Syracuse and Palmyra, and Sunday, May 15, at Nebraska City Public, Lourdes Central Catholic and Auburn Public.
There are several good websites with ideas for planning fun graduation parties without the alcohol, such as
