YOUTH VOLUNTEERS DEDICATE WEEKEND TO SERVICE

Youth As Resources

Youth As Resources volunteers dedicated the weekend before Christmas to community service projects. Youth volunteers chose to focus their efforts this holiday season collecting food pantry items and assisting with the Red Kettle Campaign for SENCA (Southeast Nebraska Community Action Council, Inc.)

 YAR project

"I tell them they are the leaders. The project must be youth led, giving them choice and ownership, and it must meet a need in the community. I'm just there to guide them along," says Vanessa Sherman, YAR Coordinator.

Youth collected food pantry items at Food Pride totaling over $200 in food, non-food items and cash donations. Red kettle contributions totaled more than $500 while ringing bells outside the Wal-Mart location. Altogether, more than 100 hours of volunteer service were contributed by youth volunteers. "It felt good to be part of something that was helping other people," said Tyler, YAR volunteer.

Youth As Resources volunteers would like to thank Food Pride for their partnership in making this event a great success and thank everyone that donated at the Food Pride and Wal-Mart locations that weekend.

If you would like more information about SENCA and the services provided to area youth and families you may contact Rena at 873-6459. If you wish to learn more about the Youth As Resources Program and upcoming service opportunities contact  Vanessa Sherman at Partners for Otoe County, 873-6346.

Thank youfor your past participation or interest in the United Against Violence initiative for Otoe County.

Another Legal High Drug for Parents to be Aware Of:  Bath Salts

Mephedrone, also known as 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC), Bath Salt-drugor 4-methylephedrone, is a synthetic CNS Stimulant and is an analog of cathinone. Slang names include meph, drone, MCAT, and "Bath Salts."  It is reportedly manufactured in China and is chemically based on the cathinone compounds found in the Khat plant native to eastern Africa.  It comes in the form of tablets or a powder, which users can swallow, snort or inject, producing similar effects to MDMA,  the amphetamine family, and cocaine.  This drug advertised as a bath salt, is not illegal to posses or distribute and can be found in head shops or on the internet.

As well as producing the intended stimulant effects, negative side effects occur when mephedrone is used, with Bruxism (teeth grinding) being the most common.  In addition to bruxism, other general indicators include hallucinations, vomiting, blood circulation problems, rashes, anxiety, paranoia, fits and delusions.  Side effects may include poor concentration, poor short-term memory, increased heart rate, abnormal heart rhythm, abnormal heart rate, depression (post administration), profuse sweating caused by elevated body temperature, dilated pupils, and an inability to open the mouth caused by muscle rigidity.  When snorted it can also cause nose bleeds and nasal burning.

These effects last different amounts of time, depending on the way the drug is taken.  When taken orally, users report they can feel the effects within 15-45 minutes, when snorted the effects are felt within minutes. The effects last for between two and three hours when taken orally or nasally, but only half an hour if taken intravenously.

  TeamMates Volunteers Needed

Be A Mentor

January is National Mentoring Month!  It is a great time to take a moment to thank the mentors in your life and reflect on how you can pay it forward.

We need YOU to help the team with one of our hardest challenges... There are so many kids who want to meet with a mentor!  The problem?  There simply aren't enough adults volunteering in our community to meet the demand.

We need YOU to recruit 1 additional volunteer for our chapter.

Youth in our community can benefit from having a mentor to listen when they say...this is what I think...this is what I believe...this is what I fear...this is what I dream.     Please help TeamMates of Nebraska City meet the mentoring needs of our community.  We have several young men in grades 3-7 waiting to be matched with a mentor.  Mentors meet with their student once a week at school.

Ask friends, family or coworkers to join the team!

It's easy to get started mentoring with TeamMates!    1. Apply  2. Train  3. Meet Your Mentee!  Visit www.teammates.org to begin the application process or call Stacie at 402.873.6343
