Local BarBen Rice Faces Set Back

Although the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission upheld the City of Nebraska City's revocation of the liquor license for Good Times at Stanley's, a downtown bar, the bar will remain open pending an appeal.

"We'll continue to operate," owner Derek Winterstein said.  "They upheld the city's decision and we were advised to appeal the decision to a judge."
The bar's owners have 30 days to file an appeal with the District Court of Lancaster County, said Hobie Rupe, director of the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission.

The ruling came after a day-long hearing on Tuesday, said Nebraska City Attorney Bill Davis. The hearing included testimony from city officials.
The city council voted to revoke the license in June after Police Chief David Lacy reported that police had responded to many incidents at the bar, located at 704 Central Ave., and had found owners uncooperative at times.

Nearly 300 Medications Turned in at First National Prescription Take Back Day

Partners for Otoe County coordinated the community's first prescription take back day on Saturday, September 25th, in conjunction with the first National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.  A total of 295 different containers of prescription medications were collected for disposal over a four hour period at the Nebraska City Walgreens. The service was free and anonymous.

Sgt. Dana Schebaum and Sgt. Benjamim Murray of the Nebraska City Police Depart provided the required security.  Local volunteers assisting with the event from the Elks Club were Kent Blum, Kermit Holmes, and A.O.Gigstad.  Nebraska City EMTs Josh Kendrick, Josh Hotsenpillar and Andrew Snodgrass also participated.  Kent Blum indicated that the Nebraska City Elks Chapter has already planned to lead this event again next year and make it an annual event in Nebraska City.

The purpose of the nationwide "Take-Back" initiative is to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.  Prescription medication abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States.  For more information about reducing prescription medication abuse, visit http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/takeback or www.PreventRxAbuse.org.
