Invest an Hour in the Life of a Child
volunteeringWith school getting underway this month, new volunteers are needed to work with children in several P4OC programs.  Consider giving an hour per week of your time to make a difference in the life of a child.  There are many choices available for working one to one with children of various ages, at various times of the day or week and at different locations across Otoe County:

Study Buddies Tutoring Program pairs a volunteer from the community, high school age or older, with an elementary student.  The two work together one hour per week in a community setting so the child can improve reading or math skills.  Volunteer tutors are needed in Nebraska City, Syracuse and Talmage.  The next Study Buddies tutor training will be held in Nebraska City at Arbor Bank on Tuesday, September 7, at 5:30 pm.  For more information contact Holly at 873-6343.

TeamMates Mentoring Program pairs an adult volunteer from the community with a student who can benefit from an another positive adult role model in his or her life.  The two meet one hour per week at school and share a variety of activities. Volunteer mentoring opportunities are available with students at Hayward Elementary and Nebraska City Middle School.  The next TeamMates mentor training is Monday, August 30 at 6:30 pm at the Nebraska City Center for Children and Families.  To inquire or register, please contact Stacie at 873-6343.

Otoe County CASA Court Appointed Special Advocates Program matches an adult volunteer advocate with children from one family.  The volunteer speaks up for the best interest of the child in court. A 30-hour CASA volunteer training is currently underway in Otoe County.  Contact Jo  at 873-6343 for more information.

Olivia is HomeOlivia

Olivia Sherman finally came home August 11 to join her parents, Scott and Vanessa and her older sister, Addison at the age of 3 months and 4 days.  She was born May 7, 2010, six weeks earlier than expected, and has been a patient at Childrens' Hospital since that time.

Olivia has proved to be a fighter from her first day!  She has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and you can join Olivia in her fight.

Tammi Thompson and Stacie Higgins will each be running distance races this fall in honor of Olivia.  Tammi will run the Omaha Half Marathon (13.1miles) on September 26 and  Stacie will run the Market to Market  Relay (86 mile team event, each runner completing 13 miles) on October 9. The runners have committed to making a donation for each mile they train and race. They encourage others to do the same.  You can make a pledge per mile of training, per mile of the race or just a donation.  Donations can be made directly to Vanessa and Scott Sherman to help offset bills or to the  Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help find a cure.

To make a donation please contact Stacie Higgins at 873-6343 or  teammates@windstream.net or Tammi Thompson at 873-8920 or tthompson@stez.org. Donations may also be mailed to 917 Wildwood Lane, Nebraska City, NE 68410

Vanessa Sherman is the Otoe County Juvenile Diversion Coordinator at Partners for Otoe County. Vanessa and her husband, Scottie, want to thank everyone who has helped since Olivia's birth and during her stay in the hospital. So many have been so generous in numerous ways.  On the Sherman family blog, Vanessa shares "Without your love and support I'm not sure how we would have made it."

Less than 60 days after a city ordinance was passed mandating that employees of liquor license holders in Nebraska City be certified in responsible beverage server training, four area businesses are leading the way in successfully training 100% of their employees through the TiPS Beverage Server Training Program.  Congratulations to:
  • Lied Lodge and Conference Center
  • The Avenue Grill
  • Tag's One Stop
  • Toddy Shop
Partners for Otoe County has been able to help these area businesses achieve this high standard by offering a state-certified training called TiPS since January of 2010. TiPS certification training is available free of charge for all liquor license holders and their employees in Otoe County, thanks to a Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  Persons who successfully complete the TiPS training are certified for three years.  For more information about TiPS, contact Tim at 873-6343.
