Third Summer Art Camp a Big Success

Art Camp 1-3Partners for Otoe County and the Kimmel-Harding-Nelson Center for the Arts completed their third annual Summer Art Camp July 26-30, 2010. Forty children, grades 1-6, participated under the leadership of Katy Bovick, with Amanda Davis and Ellen Chamley assisting.  The students completed self-portraits, animal eye pencil/chalk drawings, metal embossing and tooling, and abstract collages. Artwork was displayed for family and friends on the lastArt Camp 4-6 day of Art Camp. Thanks to the folks at the Kimmel-Harding-Nelson Center for the Arts for proving the space for the art camp, to the Nebraska Arts Council for funding half of the artist's fees, and to the four individuals who donated camp scholarships for providing a wonderful summer enrichment experience for Otoe County young people. The two group projects pictured in the backgrounds of these photos are currently on display at the KHN Center.
Essary Honored by TeamMates Mentoring Program 2010 Annual Partnership Meeting

LINCOLN NE --TeamMates coordinators, board membersAmerican Red Cross Logo and mentors from over 100 communities across Nebraska, Iowa and California gathered last week at TeamMates Annual Partnership Meeting. Each year the two day meeting brings together the TeamMates leadership for training, guest speakers, and educational session. The meetings are concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating mentoring and preparing to kick off the program for the upcoming school year. TeamMates leadership joined Tom and Nancy Osborne, the co-founders of the program, to revisit the original inspiration for the program.

The TeamMates Mentoring Program relies on outstanding local leadership to provide quality mentoring services across Nebraska and Iowa. Sheila Essary of Nebraska City, Darrell Miller of Wayne, Kim Baliman of Kimball and Julie Lausterer of Saunders County were recognized for outstanding volunteerism.  Sheila was nominated by Stacie Higgins, TeamMates of Nebraska City Chapter Coordinator.   Shelia's contribution to the Nebraska City TeamMates board over the past several years has been a great asset in a number of ways.  As an employee of Cargill, Shelia acts as an ambassador for TeamMates and recruits mentors for the program.  She also works with Cargill to provide over 300 steaks every year for the annual TeamMates golf tournament.  The role of Sheila and Cargill is a great asset to the local program and their actions impact several youth and mentors in Nebraska City.

In addition, Nebraska City was selected to participate in a pilot project with the Clifton Strengths Institute at Gallup University.  Mentors and their students will have the privilege of using the StrengthsExplorer curriculum to further develop their mentoring relationship.

The mission of the TeamMates Mentoring Program is to positively impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential. The TeamMates Mentoring Program was founded in 1991 by Tom and Nancy Osborne to provide support and encouragement to school-aged youth.

To join the team and be a mentor, call 402.873.6343 or go to www.teammates.org.  The next mentor training is Monday, August 30 at 6:30 pm at the Nebraska City Center for Children and Families.  To inquire or register, please contact Stacie Higgins at 873-6343 or teammates@windstream.net
