Answers to Behind-the-Scenes Producers' Questions

If I were going to take a class at RCTV, which one should I start with?
Rashad

Rashad -
Tough question, It really depends on your goals.

The editing class is a good foundation class because you will come away knowing how to edit, which is helpful if you want to produce shows in the studio or make your own videos. If your goal is really to get hands-on experience with cameras, you might want to start with the TV Production Course, where you'll actually start producing live shows around your fourth class.  The documentary class, which will be offered again in the fall goes into both shooting and editing, but does not cover tv production.

Thanks for your interest in taking a class at RCTV-15. Feel free to give us a buzz at 585.325.1238 so we can give you better guidance once we know your personal goals.

Fifth grade students from Martin Luther King School #9 are exploring and filming Monroe County Parks with RCTV staff members Joshua Bloodworth and Rajesh Barnabas, as part of a grant-funded initiative made possible through the Palma Foundation.
"This is the second year we're doing this and it's been a great learning experience for the kids," said Josh.

This year, the students visited Mendon Ponds Park where they experienced snow shoeing. They also learned about animal tracking from Margot Bauer, an expert from

Cornell Cooperative Extension, the organization with which RCTV is partnering on this learning initiative.

When the project is completed, the students will have explored and helped to film and to write bi-lingual English/Spanish documentaries on Mendon Ponds Park, Genesee Country Village & Museum and Highland Park and its Lamberton Conservatory.

Rick Osborne joined RCTV-15 as Programming Manager fifteen years ago, coming from Fox News.

"In those days, programming was a lot different than it is now.  You used to have ten tape decks and you punched a time into each clock to trigger the next deck when the last show had stopped running. We used to have to come in at 11 p.m. or midnight to rotate tapes."

Although the function of programming has changed, it's still no easy job.  RCTV has over 80 programs that must be ingested into the computer system in real time and programmed into the schedule each week, which takes about 75% of his time. The rest is spent in teaching classes at RCTV-15, the operation of the station, and to a lesser degree, on producing shows, movies and PSAs.

Even while at Fox, Rick was involved with Rochester Community Television., "I was producing shows through RCTV. I started taping a program at a Night Club called 'The Egg' near the Liberty Pole and contacted record labels to include music videos. It just grew from there."

Rick continues to produce Rhythm and Business, although he no longer hosts the music video show. With his background in music videos and his contacts in the industry, it's not surprising that he produces occasional music videos, but his real fascination is in producing movies and Public Service Announcements.

"They're challenging and rewarding, and they tap into your creativity," he explained.

Blind Date is one of his favorite movies he was involved with. He filmed, wrote and produced it, in collaboration with Kate Washington, who has just become an RCTV Board Member. The program was produced for Alternatives for Battered Women.

"I really enjoy my job at RCTV. I went to Adelphi University for Communications, and not only do I get to use my creativity, I get to help people.  It's so rewarding to take people who have never held a camera before, teach them how to shoot and edit, and see them a year later producing their own show or movie."
