 CSIA PRESIDENT's MESSAGE

One thing we are well known for as Canadians is how well we adapt to seasonal changes in the weather. This is especially applicable to Canadian anglers who make the transition in the outdoors from fishing in short sleeves to down filled parkas. Many people may think fishing through the ice would be unbearable in the extreme winter conditions we experience however, with the proper gear and clothing, anglers can be quite comfortable ice fishing during the winter. Fortunately, communities across Canada are introducing ice fishing to kids and their families by promoting ice fishing derbies as a great winter sport to be enjoyed by all (whether your 2 or 92 years old).

Both Ontario and Alberta have implemented a winter "License Free Fishing Weekend" from February 19-21, 2011, encouraging these outdoor family events and individual participation. This winter let's all do our part to help grow the participation in ice fishing by promoting local events and helping out wherever we can.  I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a healthy, Happy New Year !

Sincerely,
Kim Rhodes, President
Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association

SURVEY COMPLETED EVERY 5 YEARS (DFO)
2010 Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada
IMPORTANT NOTE:  Some (not all) Canadian anglers (current licence holders) will be asked to participate in the 2010 Recreational Fishing Survey conducted by each province and summarized by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The goal is to identify trends in recreational fishery. Your responses shape management decisions, help protect the resource, and help assess the importance of fishing and fisheries in Canada. PLEASE PARTICIPATE and fill out the survey if you receive one.

CNSS - CSIA Grant recipient
On behalf of the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association (CSIA), Walter Oster of the Canadian National Sportsmen's Shows generously donated $10,000 to the Bow River Habitat Station Volunteer Society for their KIDS CAN KATCH program. A formal on-site recognition will take place at a future date and ground breaking will take place Summer 2011. A group of like-minded conservation groups, provincial/federal government support, individuals and businesses are supporting the project.

The pathway to be created around the catch and release pond in Calgary is expected to make the Kids Can Katch pond accessible to all visitors and help encourage a greater number of children to take part in the program.
LEAD in Fishing Tackle (Action Alerts)
Action Alerts work

This past fall the American Sportfishing Association, with support of the sportfishing community, successfully ran an "Action Alert Campaign" to prompt anglers to write/call their government representatives to prevent the EPA from creating any rules/regulations that may have banned lead in tackle. Here in Canada, the CSIA has secured the website name "Keep Canada Fishing" for future use.
