Family History Workshop in Duluth June 26

June 26:  MGS / Twin Ports Family History Workshop
Genealogy is a hobby, a business, and an art form. Each of these will be explored at an exceptionally valuable and informative conference presented by the Minnesota Genealogical Society and the Twin Ports Genealogical Society in Duluth on June 26, 2010. It all starts at 9:00 a.m. and finishes by 4:00 p.m., which gives you enough time to drive home if you want - the sun doesn't set until 9:00 p.m.

Tony Dierckins will tell us how to use those colorful old postcards in family history; Mary Bakeman will talk about using maps in genealogical research, and Jay Fonkert will tackle the problem of identity by showing you how he disentangled two men named A.P. Overland in northern Minnesota. Joanne Sher, a Duluth-based professional genealogist and MGS member, will teach us about Polish-Americans in France after World War I. Marian Rengel will talk about what you can find of genealogical interest on the Minnesota Digital Library's website Minnesota Reflections. Other talks will feature Slovenian, Scandinavian, and Minnesota research. See the MGS website for the full schedule of speakers and topics.

New Genealogical Records @ MHS

New archival records received at the Minnesota State Archives in April include the following of genealogical interest:
  • Park Rapids (Hubbard County) civil and criminal justice court dockets, 1893-1927. The justice court dockets inter-file with an existing set of Village of Park Rapids justice court dockets, and are valuable for family history and local history research.
  • Lake County assessment rolls, 1882-89, 1950-70. Only scattered sample years are represented, including the very early years of development and settlement in Lake County.
  • Saint Paul Municipal Court (Ramsey County) indexes to criminal cases, 1888-1947, and the criminal dockets, 1965-80.
  • Stillwater State Prison records, 1869-2005. Many of the records inter-file with, or continue existing record series already preserved in the State Archives collection.
You can read the full April acquisition report online once it is posted.
