Greetings!

30thIt's the beginning of another school year, and for Pathways, it's a big one.  It's our 30th year providing educational and therapeutic programs so that students with emotional and behavioral disabilities can learn and become independent, responsible members of society.  Our theme for the year, "Moving Forward Together", celebrates the three decades that now form a foundation of experience and success on which we will build.  It acknowledges what has become a central principle of the way Pathways operates, that enabling success for our students must be a community effort.  Dedicated teachers, skilled therapists and knowledgeable professionals, even when working as a well-coordinated team, are not enough.  Our students need the strong web of support that comes from service providers, mentors, employers, internship providers, tutors, family members and many others.  In the months ahead The Pathfinder will document the stories of our thirtieth year, of how individuals and organizations large and small come together with the common purpose of enabling young people overcome tremendous obstacles, moving forward together.

can now tell you that they have arrived!

The first weeks of the school year were spent settling in, despite obstacles from Mother Nature in the form of an earthquake and hurricane! Neither damaged the new site, but both caused disruption due to loss of power and school closings. However, all is running smoothly now, and the school's new home has many advantages.

The site is more centrally located for most of the students served by the school, and its space on the building's

The library

ground floor is both safer and more recognizable as a school, rather than an office suite. Proximity to parks and fields gives more opportunity for outdoor activities, healthy exercise, and nature-based learning projects. Inside, the staff and students both appreciate the multiple classrooms and therapy room, which allow separate activities and classes to take place simultaneously. The spacious design, large rooms and crisp, clean décor in general create an environment conducive to learning, while the new smart board makes it possible to incorporate more interactive learning experiences into the daily routine.

Early in the year, Pathways-Anne Arundel will host an arts-integrated residency with visual artist David Cunningham. He will guide the students to design and create a mural to be installed at the site, helping them make the school even more their own.
