Greetings!

In addition to a well-deserved break, summer for Pathways staff offers time to review the finished school year and plan for the next.  Those two activities are paralleled by this August issue of The Pathfinder. In it, we look at highlights of the past year from each of our schools and peek at the one ahead, which will mark the beginning of Pathways' 30th year. The administrative team has chosen the theme for next year, 2011-2012, appropriately: "Moving Forward Together".  We'll be talking more about that in future issues.  For now, we'll celebrate the achievements of 2010-2011.  They are  the foundation that will enable us to move forward into the exciting year ahead.

Highlights reflecting Pathways
2010-2011 theme, 

 "A Community of Promise"

 

  • Anne Arundel: community-based program offering highly individualized academics, therapeutic support and preparation for independent living.

 

At this program's 13th annual retreat for students, their families and staff, students presented the culmination of a week-long arts education residency in percussive dance.  In the performance the students demonstrated what they had learned by expressing themselves through dance.  By the end, the entire audience, which included parents, staff and other students, was able to throw aside all performance anxiety and participate enthusiastically in the movement. 

  • Crossland Re-Entry: replicating the success of DuVal Re-Entry, this school for students with emotional disabilities within a public high school offers access to resources such as technical academies and extra-curricular activities

 

The In-School Branch of the Transit Employees Federal Credit Union (TEFCU), staffed by Pathways students, served the entire Crossland student body and provided financial literacy education and career preparation for Pathways students.  TEFCU and its in-school branch liaison received one of two Pathways Community Partner awards for 2011.

 

  • DuVal Re-Entry: the first-of-its-kind mainstreaming program within a public school  remains successful in its 21st year.

 

A week-long poetry intensive encouraged students to explore the use of metaphor to enhance writing and communication skills.  They each prepared several individual contributions to the project's publication "A Celebration of Poetry".

 

  • Edgewood: individualized instruction, social skills development and work experience in preparation for independent living and life success

 

Students participated in an array of career and job experiences, including the Young Entrepreneurship Program (YEP).  This program prepares young people to identify and realize their dreams by teaching principles and ethics of business development.  YEP successfully encouraged a recent Edgewood graduate, a talented artist, to take concrete steps toward marketing his art and eventually opening a studio. YEP and its founders received the other Pathways Community Partner award for 2011. 

  • Northwood at Hyattsville: intensive academic preparation for post-secondary education

 

Students in Northwood's environmental science class spent a day of hands-on learning at Wings Over America, an outdoor education center on 880 acres along the Little Patuxent River.  The students identified and removed invasive plants and observed owls, frogs and deer.

 

  • Springville Re-Entry: school-based academic program, individualized intensive preparation for high school

 

Students learned in several arenas through the year: a trip to the Baltimore Aquarium for hands-on education about mollusks and other sea creatures; service-learning through work at a food bank and soup kitchen; and language arts during an arts-integrated residency with story-teller and theater artist Arianna Ross.
