Greetings!
Jan Vance

Welcome to the new Edmonds Chamber of Commerce Member Newsletter. As you can see we have a new layout... we also have a new Chamber logo we'd like to introduce to all our members. This logo is the result of many months of work by the Chamber PR/Marketing Committee. The committee spent this year discussing the many unique aspects of the Edmonds Chamber, the future of the Chamber, and what they wanted that future to look like. One of the results of this hard work is this new Chamber logo designed by Matt Mikulsky of CHATTER Creative. It is the hope of all involved in this process that this new logo will set the tone for further changes in 2010 that will help lead the Chamber in it's mission to promote the economic vitality of the greater Edmonds business community.

Stay tuned for more exciting changes to your Chamber!

Chatter Creative to give Edmonds Chamber of Commerce a "fresh look"

During a time when advertising is extremely important and information needs to be easily accesible, Edmonds Chamber of Commerce reached out to local ad agency Chatter Creative to help update their current brand.

Through the process of refreshing their brand, Edmonds Chamber of Commerce will be adding many new member benefits, as well as features that utilize progressive media such as Twitter and Facebook to keep up with the changing times.

Matthew Mikulsky, owner and creative director for Chatter Creative, won the bid for the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce project after presenting a fresh logo concept and vision that he says "will launch them into the future." Mikulsky also said his inspiration for the new design is directly derived from spending time on the waterfront in Downtown Edmonds.

"Logos are extremely important to the overall rebranding process. It's one of the first pieces that set the overall tone. It's very important to get it right. The board made a great choice. We couldn't be more pleased. Edmonds is a cool place and should be represented with a cool look," said Mikulsky.

Economic Strength in Membership

What does it take to build a strong Chamber membership? It takes effort, that's for sure; it takes organization; it takes commitment; and it takes volunteers!

It takes effort - the effort of many to make calls, send e-mails, knock on doors and - most of all - ask.
Sure, asking for memberships, but also asking to join in an effort that affects all businesses and, in turn, can make a sizable difference in the community as a whole. Usually, good things happen when people come together.

It takes organization - you can't just send people out on the street and expect them to return with fistfuls of commitments. It requires an organized effort from staff to volunteers, there are lists to assemble, research to be done, packets to be gathered, meetings to be conducted, recognition to be thought of - all before the first contact can be made.

It takes commitment -the commitment of many to come together in earnest to lend an extraordinary effort, which has the potential to produce amazing results; the commitment of a Chamber Board and its staff to their membership to provide them with the necessary tools for success.

Most of all it takes volunteers. It's been proven over and over that volunteers are the ones most effective in promoting chamber membership. The testimony from a trusted customer can be more convincing than a pitch from a staffer. When the economy is rocking, it can be difficult to convince businesses that they need a helping hand to grow. A well-run chamber of commerce can be an important source for referrals, networking and support. It opens doors. What business doesn't need more of that during these times?

These challenging economic times will be remembered for a lot of things, most especially the time we had to re-think our businesses. The old ways no longer work the way they used to. The chamber serves as an essential resource during all times but most especially when a business needs assistance in cutting a new path to success.

As a chamber grows so will the community. The chamber has a staff, but its strength is not just in its staff. Its effectiveness and success is defined more by what the membership brings to the table.

2010 Preferred Business Directory

The Chamber staff and the Journal Media Group have been hard at work putting together the 2010 Preferred Business Directory. Your listing in the directory is a benefit of your Chamber membership. Over 11,000 copies of the directory will be direct mailed to local households and businesses on January 5, 2010. Another 1,000 copies will be available on stands throughout the Edmonds area, and 1,000 more copies will be available through the Chamber office and Visitor's Center. The Chamber staff will also be mailing copies to all Chamber members.

The Chamber staff would like to THANK the Journal Media Group for putting together this very important Chamber tool. Their guidance, expertise, and hard work have been invaluable to this process and we are immensley grateful for all their support. The finished product is something we are all proud of and we hope you will be too!
Mentors Needed for Local High School Seniors

Edmonds-Woodway and all high schools in the state require seniors to complete a Culminating Project as part of students' graduation requirements.  At EWHS, this project must be related to students' future career interests, which is why we need your help!

You have so much industry experience and expertise that our young people could benefit from.  Please consider the following ways you can get involved at Edmonds-Woodway High School:

Allowing a student to shadow you for 20 hours in order to learn more about your profession
and the day to day environment and tasks involved in your career field.  Time commitment:
          about 20 hours.

Acting as a project mentor for a student who has custom-designed their own Culminating
project and is looking for an adult professional who has experience/skills in a very unique &
specific career field.  Time commitment:  Varies depending on how much you and your
student meet.  Anywhere from 3 to 10 hours. (Past examples-student is building a wooden
viola & needs a professional viola maker, or student wants to build a computer from scratch
and needs a mentor with the same expertise)

Evaluating/Scoring Culminating Project presentations on January 28th and/or May 7th.  Time
commitment: about 3 hours on each of the presentation days.

If you are interested in volunteering your time to help local students, or if you have any questions regarding this program, please contact Courtney Cossey at cosseyc@edmonds.wednet.edu or 425.431.6122.
