President's Message
David A. Kelly, President & CEO Two lessons from 9/11
Yesterday was the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, a date which touched us all deeply in a myriad of ways. While my heart still aches for the thousands upon thousands of people who lost a loved one that day, my mind wanders to two lessons I learned from those tragic events.
I was working at a chamber of commerce in Indiana back in 2001. We didn't have a television in the building, so we were all huddled around the receptionist's radio, trying to make sense of what we were hearing. We had been listening for some time, when the CEO came out and urged everyone to get back to work. "The terrorists want the economy to come to a standstill." He said. "By doing your job, you are doing the best thing you can to fight back." Lesson one - Every time you do something that contributes to the economy or to the community, you are being heroic. Chamber members are heroic every day.
As I look back on that day, and the days that followed, I think of all the stories of how people pulled together. Whether it was a new civility in politics or on the street corner, people running back in to one of the towers to save others or people 3000 miles away giving blood, or people weeping at the story of someone they never met or counselors traveling hundreds of miles to comfort rescue workers at Ground Zero, never before in my lifetime had this country seen such unity and selflessness. Lesson two - Working together for the betterment of others enables us to achieve great things. Chamber volunteers achieve great things every day!

CRT concludes season with modern comedy 'End Days' Clackamas Repertory Theatre (CRT) concludes its eighth season with the modern comedy "End Days" by Deborah Zoe Laufer, opening Friday, September 21, in the Osterman Theatre. Winner of the 2008 American Theatre Critics Association Steinberg Citation, "End Days" is a comedy about a family struggling to negotiate life in an increasingly unpredictable world. The play combines Rachel, a Goth girl; Sylvia, her evangelizing, born-again mom; Arthur, her post-9/11 depressed dad; Nelson an Elvis-loving teenager; Jesus, and Stephen Hawking, and renders the combination hilarious as the family is forced to make choices about what it holds most sacred when the end might be near. In fact, if Sylvia is to be believed, the Apocalypse is next Wednesday. Full article

Show your true colors this fall - Donate blood at the Sandy Fire District
With the start of autumn, the leaves turn beautiful reds, oranges and yellows before the season gives way to winter. As the trees show their colors this fall, please show your own true colors and give blood. Your blood donation could help save the life of more than one person and only takes about one hour. Please make sure you find time to donate blood this month.
Blood is a medicine that only volunteer donors can give, and it is vital for patient care throughout our area and across the United States. Every day, the American Red Cross must meet the blood needs of accident victims, premature babies, people undergoing treatment for cancer, and other patients in local hospitals. Show your true colors this fall and find time to help the Red Cross maintain a stable blood supply. It feels great when you find a way to help save a life. To make an appointment at the upcoming Sandy Community blood drive at Sandy Fire Station, 17460 Burns Avenue, on Wednesday, September 12, from 2:00pm to 7:00pm call 1-800-RED CROSS or go online with sponsor code: SandyComm.

Highway 213 Jughandle Project
Third northbound travel lane opens
On Monday, September 10, the contractor worked overnight to restripe the southbound travel lanes. All Highway 213 travel lanes between Redland Road and Clackamas River Drive shifted a few feet to the left. On Wednesday morning, motorists had their first opportunity to drive on the new northbound travel lane on Highway 213. The new travel lane began just north of Redland Road and extended to I-205. The contractor worked overnight Tuesday to restripe the northbound travel lanes and open the new lane. Motorists are advised to drive with extra caution through the work zone as they become familiar with the new travel lane alignments.
Nighttime Repaving
The contractor will work nights for approximately two weeks to repave Highway 213 between I-205 and Redland Road. Beginning on Sunday, September 16, motorists should expect delays from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Highway 213. Paving is weather dependent, but the contractor hopes to complete Highway 213 repaving by the end of September.
