DIRECTOR'S REPORT

This October column is a shameless plug for our new, fabulous fundraiser "A Haunting at Hoyt; the Ultimate Halloween Costume Party" with proceeds going to the Saginaw Library Foundation. We are very lucky to have such a beautiful, historic building in which to hold a spectacularly spooky event. You can buy tickets directly at Hoyt, charge by phone at 755-9833, or purchase one from me the next time you see me! Start thinking of your costume now - or feel free to come as you are. It's a rare night that you can let loose at the library - don't miss this once a year opportunity to have fun, dress up, and support your library system.

The Public Libraries of Saginaw celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2012 with a special presentation by one of Saginaw's most notable and respected citizens, David Gamez. Mr. Gamez will speak about the very humble beginnings of health care for migrant workers in the Saginaw Valley at the Guadalupe and Saginaw Clinics, and how this clinic would be the inspiration for Health Delivery.

Please come and share your memories of the Guadalupe Clinic or the Saginaw Clinic with us at this event. A reception will follow the program. Que Sabroso Desserts is providing Mexican pastries.

When & Why is Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrated?

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 - October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Today, Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority in the United States, with more than 45 million people, comprising more than 17 percent of the total population.

National Hispanic Heritage Month had its origins in 1968 when Congress passed Pub. L. 90-498, which authorized and requested the President to issue an annual proclamation designating the week including September 15 and 16 as National Hispanic Heritage Week. On August 17, 1988, the 100th Congress enacted Public Law 100-402, which extended the observance from a week to a month.

The Hispanic Division and the Hispanic Cultural Society has selected as this year's theme: "Diversity United, Building America's Future Today." Please join us at a variety of programs that we have planned at the Public Libraries of Saginaw for all ages.

Teen Read Week Celebration!

There are so many options that teens can use for entertainment, so it's important for us to remind them to spend time reading; it's free, fun and can be done anywhere. We also want to encourage them to celebrate reading just the way they like it: books, magazines, e-books, audiobooks and more. Research continues to show that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce.

Teen Read Week started in 1998 and is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) of the American Library Association. For more information about teen services or suggested reading for teens, please contact any branch of the Public Libraries of Saginaw, our Children and Teen Services Coordinator, Rhonda Farrell-Butler, or visit our website at www.saginawlibrary.org. Programs are for youth ages 10-18 (Tweens & Teens).scientist
