DIRECTOR'S VIEW

Over the course of the past month, I have attended a number of annual meetings and fundraisers - seems like May is a busy month for those. At every event I've attended, I've been asked about e-books and traditional books and what my thoughts were about them. Inevitably, the person asking me the question has a great passion for one or the other and tries to get me to agree that one is better. Other people then chime in, with the discussion sometimes becoming so heated that I excuse myself and let them finish their arguments among themselves. I overheard one combatant claim that traditional books are better because "if I throw a book at you, I can still read it again - if I throw my Kindle at you, it will probably break".......can't argue with that logic! It is arguments like these that make me smile with the knowledge that libraries, regardless of whether we are electronic or hard copy, will remain an important, passionate part of an informed and educated community.

Park & Read Passes Now Available!

PARKNRIDESpend a lazy day with a good book in the great outdoors compliments of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Library of Michigan.

Back for a fourth summer, the DNR and the Library of Michigan are offering their Park & Read program at more than 400 participating libraries across the state.

While checking out a book, Park & Read allows library cardholders to "check-out" a one-day pass that waives the Recreation Passport entry fee into any Michigan state park or recreation area. This $10 savings also provides a one-time, free access to more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer, and to make the day even more relaxing, some of the state parks are offering the loan of a hammock.

Come in to your local branch of the Public Libraries of Saginaw to check out your free pass and a couple of good books!

Supplies are limited to one pass per family per summer - be the first to get this great value!

Kelly Ferchau Retires After 35 Years!

Kelly (Swartz) Ferchau started working for the Public Libraries of Saginaw in September 1977 as a Library Page in the Hoyt Children's Department. She quickly transitioned to Hoyt Circulation, became a secretary in Reference, worked as the Purchasing Manager, and for the last 15 years has been a valuable asset in our Local History and Genealogy Department. She regularly collaborates with staff from the Castle Museum and local historians. Kelly's love is her family, husband Jack, daughters Chelsea and Jessica, and granddaughter Emma. Her passions are the Detroit Tigers, genealogy and Michigan history, and gardening. When she retires, Kelly is looking forward to spending more time with Emma, raising chickens, and working in her flower and vegetable gardens. Kelly's bubbly personality, her knowledge of local history and of the library in general will be greatly missed. Her last day with the library will be June 28th. Best of Luck Kelly!
