DIRECTOR'S VIEW

As the calendar turns over and we begin writing dates that now end in 2012, I can't help but ask myself where the last year went? Even my son, who is only ten, expressed surprise at how quickly the months raced past (especially the months of June, July, and August!) I love the thought of the New Year - it is a time to reflect on accomplishments and what you've learned. One of my friends wrote on Facebook the other day that she laments all the things she has yet to know - I replied with the thought that it is a joy to be a lifelong learner - you never know what cool things are around the corner if you allow yourself to see them. Use your library expand your lifelong learning and see what is just around the proverbial corner - you never know until you try. Start here.

Off To A Good Start - Library Card Sign Up!

Through the hard work of our Children's Services Department and staff from all library locations, teachers and principals, we have been able to distribute 635 cards to "new" library users. What's so unique about these new users? They are kindergarten students from Saginaw City, Saginaw Township and Francis Reh Academy.

Since the month of September, staff has distributed applications, processed cards, visited classrooms and shared the joy of reading with our new users. All students received "reading is power" bracelets, and a plastic sleeve to store their library card. A special thank you to the Mid-Michigan Children's Museum who provided "free" museum passes for all of the 1,034 kindergarteners we visited.

The smiling faces of kindergarteners receiving their first library card, and the lasting effect expressed by a staff member's son, who slept with his card, is priceless. This has been an exciting experience for all involved, and it further supports my belief, "that service to our youth is one of the greatest investments for the future of library services in our community."

Sincerely, Rhonda Farrell-Butler, Children's and Teen Services Coordinator
