DIRECTOR'S REPORT

That "soon-to-be-fall" feeling is in the air - beautiful sleeping weather, a different slant to the sun, echoes of teams on the practice fields. Watching and listening to kids in the library is fun right now - some of them are so excited to get back to school - others, not so much. I watched one child in the store the other day - checking against his school supply list, picking up every single color of pencil sharpener in the bin and deciding with painful deliberation which one was the right one for him, as if his very success rested on it. Other kids just grabbed and threw supplies in the cart without a second look. At the top of every school supply list should be a library card and we are working with the schools to make that happen starting in kindergarten. Our goal is to have every kindergartener in our service area get a library card! We're starting small this year with a few pilot classes and will ramp the effort up over the next year. Does the kindergartener YOU know have a library card?

Off To A Good Start - Library Card Sign Up!

"I got my own card now!" That was the response made by a kindergartner at Kempton Elementary School, when she and 45 other classmates received their first library card. Rhonda Farrell-Butler, Coordinator for Children's & Teen Services, and Butman-Fish staff piloted the program this past spring in an effort to help parents start their child's reading and learning journey. The children's staff of the Public Libraries of Saginaw will work closely with principals, teachers, and parents to register Kindergartners in the Saginaw City and Saginaw Township School Districts for library cards.

After parents return completed applications to their child's teacher, library staff will process cards, and return to the school for a special story, library card distribution and classroom picture. Parents will receive a library packet in the mail, and children will receive a sleeve to keep their library card in. The card sleeve says, "Off to a Good Start with My Smart Card," and features the library's logo. The goal is to put library cards in the hands of every kindergartner in these districts by November 1, 2011. For more information, please contact Rhonda Farrell-Butler at 989-755-0904 ext. 814 or rbutler@saginawlibrary.org.
