DIRECTOR'S VIEW
According to a new report put out by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, only three out of every ten fourth graders in Michigan are considered proficient in reading skills. Not only that, but reading improvement stalls and even retreats during the summer months if kids do not continue to read. It is so important to have your child, along with you and other family members, join the Summer Reading Program at the library every year. Come in to any branch of the Public Libraries of Saginaw beginning June 7 and sign up for a summer full of entertainment, increased reading skills and lifelong learning. Such a simple thing to do for such a worthwhile result. Trish Burns, Director

Summer Time is Reading Time!
Make time to read over the summer! Designate an hour a day just for books, or set aside a time once a week to go to the library. There's so much going on in the summer, that it's important to schedule time just for reading. Have kids keep a reading journal - even if it's just the book titles. Once the journal gets filled up, children will have a real sense of accomplishment that's very rewarding.
Let kids pick out books they like to make reading fun. Pay attention to what your children like and help them select books - and don't forget about non-fiction - it's not just for homework! There's a lot of rainy day fun in cookbooks and craft and activity books.
Make storytime fun by creating a story-puppet show. Or have your child use puppets and stuffed animals to create a show based on a book for other kids or the rest of the family.
Remember, kids who keep reading all summer long do much better at school in the fall. |
