DIRECTOR'S
VIEW

Among other things, March is Reading Month, which is great. It shines a spotlight on reading and how libraries are integral in getting books in the hands of the community. My question is... why isn't every month considered reading month? For that matter, why isn't every day considered reading day? When you consider the benefits of reading, it should be a part of your daily life. We take time to nourish our bodies every day - let reading be the one thing you do every day to nourish your mind. Take the time and initiative to always have a new answer to the question "What are you reading today?"

"Puss in Boots" presents stories from around the world about the most famous cats in history. The title story is the famous tale of a wily cat who transforms her master from a pauper to a prince. LIBRARY RECEIVES NATIONAL GREAT STORIES CLUB GRANT
The Public Libraries of Saginaw is one of 265 libraries nationwide to receive a Great Stories CLUB grant from the American Library Association Public Programs Office, in cooperation with the Young Adult Library Services Association.

Launched in 2005, the Great Stories CLUB is a reading and discussion program designed to reach underserved, troubled teen populations through books that are relevant to their lives. The library will be partnering with the Teen Parent Services program of the Saginaw County Youth Protection Council to offer this program to their teen parents.

The teens will be reading and discussing:

One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies
by Sonya Sones (Simon & Schuster, 2005)

The Afterlife
by Gary Soto (Harcourt, 2005)

The Rules of Survival by Nancy Werlin (Speak, 2008)

The Public Libraries of Saginaw was one of the pilot libraries testing this program when it was launched by ALA in 2005. Discussion leaders at that time, noted profound personal growth in the teens taking part in the reading and discussions, due to the depth of the issues presented in each book and how they related to the teens' personal lives. Library staff is very pleased to bring this program to Saginaw, once again, to benefit young teen parents and their families.

Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey

by David Sheff

Appearance by Award Winning Author David Sheff with a special visit by his son Nic, author of "Tweak"

Thursday, April 15 - 7:00 p.m.
Temple Theatre - Free Admission

Beautiful Boy, David Sheff's heartbreaking account of his son's addiction to crystal meth and the devastating effect it had on his family, is honest and deeply moving. It is a story far too relevant in today's society. Tweak is Nic Sheff's unflinching look at his own addiction. Join David and Nic as they tell us about what they faced --- and how they found the strength to never give up, and the courage to begin recovery and healing.

David Sheff is an accomplished journalist. A contributing editor to Playboy, he has also written for The New York Times, Wired, Fortune and Rolling Stone. His other books include All We are Saying: The Last Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Share the Reading Experience

Award winning author and journalist David Sheff has been named to the prestigious 2009 TIME 100 list of "people who most affect our world" and he is coming to Saginaw. David Sheff is the author of this year's Public Libraries of Saginaw "One Book, One Community" selection, "Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through his Son's Meth Addiction"; a book which has topped the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list.

The Public Libraries of Saginaw has selected businesses and organizations to read "Beautiful Boy" through our "Traveling Books" program. The program is simple, the library will provide "free" copies of the book to your business or organization (made possible by the Maxwell K. Pribil Hoyt Library Trust), employees/associates are invited to read the book and when completed, pass it on to a co-worker to read, thus allowing the book to travel from reader to reader and bring to fruition the "One Book, One Community" spirit of "bringing the community together through reading and discussion."

"David says he used to think that being a father to Nic would be enough to save his son. Ultimately, David found that it was not his decision."
The Oprah Winfrey Show, April 10, 2008
