DIRECTOR'S VIEW

At the end of the year, I find myself reviewing the progress and changes that the library has seen over the past twelve months. Going back to our mission statement - educate, enrich, entertain, encourage reading and lifelong learning - gives me a good measure of how we are doing. We've started a Community Resource Series to help educate the community on topics of interest, held multicultural programming to enrich our understanding of other cultures, continue to provide an outstanding Summer Reading Program for patrons of all ages to entertain and encourage reading, and began the V.I.P. series featuring celebrity readers sharing how reading shaped their careers and continues to be a big part of lifelong learning. Some of these are new programs and some are old, but all are good programs that contribute to a successful mission. We'll continue our successes into the new year and hope you join us. Have a peaceful and relaxing holiday season.

Michigan Reads Celebration
Featuring "The Pout-Pout Fish" by Deborah Diesen
Pout Pout Fish

We invite you to take part in Michigan Reads! This statewide program highlights the importance of early childhood literacy by focusing on a picture book written by a Michigan author.

December 10, 2009
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Zauel Memorial Library
3100 N. Center Rd.

"The Pout-Pout Fish" written by former Midland resident, Deborah Diesen and illustrated by Dan Hanna, is a fun, colorful story about a fish who believes he only knows how to frown, sulk and mope. Then one day, an unexpected friend comes along and helps transform him from a pout-pout fish to a kiss-kiss fish.

This unique state-wide program aims to promote the value and benefits of reading early and often to children. It also encourages family bonding through reading and increases awareness and usage of Michigan's libraries as excellent resources for learning.

For children from birth to 8 years-old.

A cooperative project with the
Great Start Collaborative of Saginaw.

Meaningful Gifts
To make the holiday season more meaningful for your family, spend time discussing topics like what are you most grateful for? How can we make the world a better place? What is your favorite holiday memory?
  • Plan a kind deed day, and see who can perform the most random acts of kindness.
  • Give gifts from the heart: (1) Write a personal note and leave it where a family member can find it. (2) Write a story or poem and share it with your family. Or...paint a picture. (3) Make a book of all the reasons you are grateful for a loved one in your life.
  • Make community service and helping those less fortunate part of your family holiday activities.

Thank You Library Supporters!

The Saginaw Public Libraries Foundation meets Saginaw Community Foundation 25th Gift Anniversary Challenge

Thanks to the generosity of library supporters, the Saginaw Public Libraries Foundation successfully met the challenge grant opportunity from the Saginaw Community Foundation in honor of its 25th Anniversary. Loyal library Foundation supporters raised over $25,000 to add to our endowment fund in less than one year. The Saginaw Community Foundation will match this with a gift of $10,000 - that's a 40% return on our investment!

The library Board and staff would like to personally thank all the library donors who helped us take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to grow our endowments in these tough economic times. It couldn't be done without the help of generous library donors like you. Money raised through this challenge grant opportunity will help our library system be in a much more financially secure position both now and in the future.
Help the Library Raise Funds While You Shop
Go to the library's Purchase Links page at to access quick links to both Amazon and Barnes & Noble:  www.saginawlibrary.org/purchasebooks.html  When you shop online through these links a  percentage of the sales will be donated to the library.  There is no additional cost to you and it is a great way to get wonderful gifts for your family and friends while supporting the library.  Thank you!
