Mary, Mother of God: A Seal Upon the Dogma of the Incarnation

In 428 Nestorius, a monk of Antioch, became the Bishop of Constantinople. He rejected the position that Mary was the "Mother of God," which he considered a confusion of the divine and human natures of Christ. He believed that God dwelt in Christ as in a temple and that he became God only by degrees. Thus, he taught there were two persons in Christ [instead of two natures in one divine person].

This heresy caused a tremendous stir in the faithful, who felt this dishonor of Jesus and Mary acutely. Nestorius, nonetheless, had the monks of Constantinople imprisoned and scourged for daring to protest his actions.

St. Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, when he heard of this said, "I am astonished that the question should ever have been raised that the Holy Virgin should ever have been called Mother of God, for it really amounts to asking, is her Son God, or is he not?"

The Alexandrians understood that when they used terms like Theotokos that though Mary was the Mother of God, she did not bear his divinity, but because she bore the person of Christ [Christokos], it is legitimate to refer to her in this way.

Cyril rejected Nestorius' position and called for a Council to settle this at Ephesus in 431. He wrote to St. Celestine, since ancient custom, he says, persuaded him to bring the matter before the pope. The Pope empowered him as his legate. The Emperor convoked the Council of Ephesus, but Nestorius thrice refused to appear. Before Ephesus was over, 15 Bishops favoring Nestorius' position were also deposed thanks to the leadership of Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria.

As our Holy Father puts it, ". . . the dogma of the divine motherhood of Mary was for the Council of Ephesus and is for the Church like a seal upon the dogma of the Incarnation, in which the Word truly assumes human nature into the unity of his person, without canceling out that nature." The people reacted with joy to its verdict!

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Elizabeth Bayley Seton was born two years before the American Revolution in 1774 and married at the age of twenty.  When her husband Will's father died, she and her husband raised his seven brothers and sisters.

Influenced by the piety of Catholic families they lived with in Italy, where her husband died in 1803, Elizabeth converted to the Church in 1805 knowing this would be a barrier to getting help from her Protestant family in raising her children.

Nonetheless, she founded the first U.S. Catholic school in Baltimore and with two other women formed a sisterhood

taking vows before Archbishop John Carroll in 1809. This became the Sisters of Charity which ran the school and did much work among the poor.

Her diaries and correspondence showed a soul deeply in love with God and full of zeal for souls. Although Mother Seton was now suffering with tuberculosis, she continued to guide her children. The Rule of the Sisterhood was formally ratified in 1812. It was based upon the Rule St. Vincent de Paul had written for his Daughters of Charity in France.

By 1818, in addition to their

first school, the sisters had established two orphanages and another school. She died in 1821 at the age of 46 and was canonized in 1975. Her feast day is celebrated on January 4th.

Sr.MarieBook

Book Signing by Fr. Carl G. Schulte, C.M. and Presentation by Erin von Uffel

Fr. Carl G. Schulte, C.M. is a Vincentian priest who resides at the Franciscan Prayer Center in Independence.  He is the author of a new book from Tan publishing entitled, The Life of Sr. Marie De Mandat-Grancey & Mary's House in Ephesus. In reviewing the book Christoph Cardinal Shoenborn observed:

Mary's House in Ephesus is one of the most extraordinary places in the world which is loved by Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims. We owe this venerable place to [Servant of God] Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey, D.C., who uncovered this hidden treasure for all of us. Today it is a special place of Christian-Muslim dialogue so urgently needed.

There will be a special book sale and signing for Fr. Schulte's new book at the Catholic Center on January 5, 2012 from 12:00-2:00 P.M.  Fr. Schulte, who is 92 years of age, will be speaking about his book and signing books. There will be other speakers, including Erin Von Uffle. Door prizes (books from the publisher Tan Books) will be awarded.  A pizza lunch will be provided for those who attend.

Evening Presentation by Erin Von Uffel and Bill Quatman

In the evening from 7:00-9:00 P.M. there will be a talk by Erin Von Uffel, who is largely responsible for the cause of Sr. Marie being brought to the attention of the Church.  She is a New Yorker who travelled the world to gather materials on the life of Sr. Marie.  In the process she witnessed many extraordinary events and people and she will share this with us all that evening.  She will be speaking about Sr. Marie and Mary's House at Ephesus, which Mary shared with the beloved disciple, St. John.  Bill Quatman, who serves on the Tribunal, and Loraine Fusaro will also be speaking and Fr. Schulte's book will be available!

Both events will be held in the Cardinal Baum room of the Catholic Center on January 5th.  Refreshments will be served.  Please join us!  There is no charge.

Adult Faith Formation Workshop

January 26, 2012

MOV
Men of Valor, Women of Virtue and Youth For Truth Conferences

The 2012 Men of Valor Conference, Friday and Saturday, January 27-28th, will feature gifted and nationally known speakers Dr. Janet Smith, Jason Evert and Dr. Doug Weiss.  The Women of Virtue Conference (January 27th, February 3-4, 2012) with Patty Schneier, Leslie Vernick and Dr. Todd Frye with a host of other great speakers. The Youth for Truth conference features Jason Evert, Molly Sanborn and Dr. Janet Smith.

Every year the number of people attending these conferences increases because the challenge of living a pure life for Christ is made more difficult by our electronic culture and the prevalence of pornography.  The breakout sessions at these conferences are designed to give practical and spiritual guidance for those who seek to protect their families.  Jason Evert speaks of "romance without regret" and provides convincing reasons to practice the virtue of chastity.

Over 1000 people from 150 different congregations attended these conferences last year so make your reservations soon. The cost is at an all time low and includes lunch.  To register by phone call 913-839-1643 or online at:

Catholicism Series
Catholics Come Home TV Campaign

Pope Paul VI in his famous Apostolic Exhortation on Evangelization, Evangelii Nuntiandi, wrote:

It is a task and mission which the vast and profound changes of present-day society make all the more urgent. Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize, that is to say, in order to preach and teach, to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile sinners with God, and to perpetuate Christ's sacrifice in the Mass, which is the memorial of His death and glorious resurrection." (Evangelii Nuntiani 14)

You have probably noticed the tasteful Catholic Come Home campaign commercials on TV and Radio.  They have been very successful in encouraging "fallen away" Catholics to return to the beauty and the sacramental life that is the Church.  Sometimes we become too complacent in assuming others will enter the Church without our example and prayers, our welcome home.

Pope Benedict XVI reminds us of the words of St. Paul, which pertain to all of us as well, "Mission is a duty about which one must say 'Woe to me if I do not evangelize' (1 Cor 9:16)...redemption and mission are acts of love [because] those who proclaim the Gospel participate in the charity of Christ."

What can we do now to evangelize.  Here are some ideas:

1. Acquaint yourself with Catholics Come Home by visiting

their web site at: http://www.catholicscomehome.org.

2. Tell others about this ad campaign and encourage them to invite Catholics not practing their faith to return to Mass.

3. Invite those you know who haven't been to church for a time to go to Mass with you,

4. Be ready to respond to those who might visit your church

as a result of this campaign,

5. Be hospitable and welcome those who have decided to

'come home,'

6. Ask your pastor to host an inquirer's class for returning

Catholics and newcomers,

7. Celebrate the return of your brothers and sisters with a

feast.

At the end of Mass we are dismissed and told to go share the love that we have just received in the Eucharist. We are told to be more like Christ. Here's another opportunity for all of us. Quoting Fr. Edward Oakes, S.J., "The Church, after all, is the Body of Christ and as such is extension of Christ's own ministry."

From Word on Fire

Catholicism: DVD Series

 Catholicism Series

The DVD ten part series by Fr. Robert Barron, a seminary professor and now nationally known figure, is sweeping the country.  Much of it will be shown on PBS stations and all of it on EWTN.  One reviewer writes:

Catholicism is nothing if not ambitious, and the product is stunning--visually beautiful, stirring, filmed at sites in Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Philippines, Turkey, India, and the Holy Land. Barron sets out to be far more than just a Ken Burns-type historian of the Catholic Church, though his series easily equals Burns' productions in quality. Instead he seeks to tell the Catholic story for listeners in the 21st century, speaking to the head, the heart, and the soul.

Certainly the wealth of Catholic Tradition and the scope and beauty of the Church and her work are on display in this video series, which also features some fine homiletic material by the Chicago priest professor. Multiple copies of the DVD series are available for sale in the BHI bookstore or parishes can (many have) sign out a copy to borrow from the Bishop Helmsing Institute library.

The series can be purchased with a facilitator's guide and study guides written by Carl Olson for each video. The topics of the DVD's are provocative as are the videos themselves:
