Teachers are the Foundation of Volusia County Schools Greetings!
Each of Volusia County's public schools has completed the process to select its Teacher of the Year. The 70 winners, chosen by their peers, are nominated to compete for the honor of Volusia County School District's 2012 Teacher of the Year, a program sponsored each year by FUTURES and the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Teacher of the Year nominees will be honored at a reception on Wednesday, November 10. The 2012 district Teacher of the Year winner will be announced at a celebration on Friday, February 4. We're still looking for support from businesses and organizations to make this year's Teacher of the Year program a success. Simply contact me to get involved.

Local Business Leaders Experience a Day in the Life of Volusia County Schools
In September, seven business and community leaders spent a day shadowing an administrator in Volusia County Schools through FUTURES Educator Intern program. They shared their experiences and provided feedback after the experience.
Brad Gordner of the Daytona Beach News-Journal spent the day shadowing Carl Persis, principal of Ormond Beach Middle School. Brad said the highlight of his day was seeing how smoothly the construction at the 50-year-old school campus was progressing and how professionally the experienced staff interacted with the middle school students. From left Russ Tysinger, director of facilities maintenance, Brad Gordner and Carl Persis, OBMS principal, tour construction at the middle school. Heather Vargas, Cobb & Cole spent her day with Creekside Middle School Principal Karen Beattie and her staff. Heather was pleasantly surprised to see Principal Beattie's frequent interaction with students, including participating in a dance class during physical education. She noted the strong school culture that exists at Creekside as a positive and says she learned a lot about the school's security planning.
Heather Vargas visits a classroom at Creekside Middle. FUTURES will host another session of Educator Intern Feb. 23-25, 2011. If you are interested in taking part, contact Beth Butera at (386) 255-6475 ext. 50730.
